Book Description

More a “how-to-see-it” than a “how-to-do-it” book, this edition explores the disguises and characteristics of shapes and forms in nature, and it examines the visual elements and the relational, moving, and emotive forces that constitute the language of drawing. Clear and objective, this book offers an intensive examination of vital drawing processes and concepts, an in-depth analysis of exceptional drawings by old and contemporary artists, and suggested exercises to enhance the readers' grasp of important measurable and dynamic phenomena. For the art student, the art teacher, the interested amateur, and the practicing artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to see drawings April 16, 2004
Format:Paperback
I have used this book for years as source material for the college level drawing courses I teach. Its greatest value is the high calibre of master drawing examples by everyone from Michelangelo to Rembrandt and Watteau, as well as appropriate and sensitive student examples. Mr. Goldstein breaks down the approach to drawing into contour line, structural line, shape, gesture, volume, combination drawing. The book is dense with writing as this is largely a verbal analysis of visual issues in which each drawing example is discussed in a very detailed manner. Some may find the approach too verbose, and indeed this is not a "how-to-draw" book in the "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" category, but more of a guide to conoisseurship and the philosophy of drawing. In fact, there are precious few exercises described for the student. I think that for the drawing student who does not have the benefit of a teacher, this book paired with a more practical "how-to" guide would be a terrific resource. This is the kind of book you will find yourself dipping into over the years. I always have it on an easy-to-reach shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Goldstein is Gold July 11, 2001
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for a college drawing class. And later on, because of scheduling reasons, I was unable to take the class. However, I kept the book and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The pictures are great...although I thought the spectrum of drawings could have been a little broader. Most pictures are black and white. Commentary is good--a nice balance between words and pictures. Goldstein has done well with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive But Worth It July 6, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased Goldstein's "Art of Responsive Drawing" on a recommendation by a classical art instructor. He pointed out that this was a favorite textbook of many top art schools and - although pricier than more widely-produced titles - it was of a much higher caliber than most other drawing books.

He could not have been more right! This book is an absolute treasure trove of instruction, history, theory and advice, with something in the order of 400 high-quality drawing reproductions, from Old Master to contemporary. This is art instruction of a very high order, without the gimmicks, tricks or shortcuts presented in many other texts. On the same token, know that this is not a beginner's drawing book. Those just starting out should begin with something a little simpler (Willenbrink's "Drawing for the Absolute Beginner" is a good introductory choice) and work their way up to Goldstein's wonderful book.

The textbook pricing is a bit painful, but this book will be a cornerstone of your art instruction and one that you will turn to again and again. The closest I've found to the Holy Grail of drawing books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh July 3, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Not the most concise textbook, but does illustrate its lessons well. If you want to learn to draw and you are a total beginner, I recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards. If you are self-taught (like me), want to get serious by building a good foundation, and don't mind explanations that are twenty times longer than necessary, this book is right for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great January 31, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This has everything any aspiring or accomplished artist needs to know about drawing. My drawing instructor brings her copy from her undergrad years to class and it's been used so much it's falling apart.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper! September 23, 2013

There's a ton of information in the book. It's broken down by descriptive chapters with exercises at the end to apply what you've learned after reading the chapter. A plus is having a lot of the masters work included in the book. It's a keeper!
