4.0 out of 5 stars LOVE the MacKades! July 25, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm so excited to see some of Nora Roberts's backlist being released on Kindle. And it doesn't get much better than the MacKade series. Rafe's book more or less sets the scene for the rest of the books, and it really works. It's not quite as emotionally compelling as some of the later books in the series, most notably Jared's and especially Devin's books, but it is still an eminently readable book.

Rafe, the former bad boy, comes back to Antietum, Maryland, as a reformed bad boy ready to make good. He buys an old supposedly haunted inn and hires Regan to furnish/refurbish it. The two of them are oil and water, but the conflicts are believable and the sparks are sizzling. Great first entry to a GREAT series!

"The Return of... was terrific!! What better way to spark interest than to write about gorgeous men!!! Rafe was all that and then some!! Regan was cool to a point, but she had her moments and rafe deserved everything he got, including her!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Nora Roberts' formula March 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Several years ago, as an interlude from my normal diet of heavy thrillers, I read Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay series about the romantic evolution of a close family of brothers. It was an interesting interlude so when I saw this Kindle book was heavily discounted and I needed another interlude I thought I would try again.

I was stunned at the similarity of the background, characters and romantic plot. A small country town, four brothers with excess testosterone, and a strong beautiful female who eventually tames one of the brothers. Nora Roberts is one of the most successful authors of this genre who has developed a formula that seems to work time and time again.

This time the brother is Rafe, the wildest of the bunch in his teens, who has returned home after 10 years having made good in real estate development. Rafe plans to restore an historic large antebellum house to its former glory and run it as a bed and breakfast. On his first day back he meets beautiful, strong minded and independent newcomer Regan Jones who is running an antique shop. Rafe commissions her to furnish his project to fit its history and, of course, plans to get personally more closely associated with the beautiful newcomer.

What follows is Roberts's normal plot of immediate physical attraction between the main characters but only a slow realisation that the attraction is more than physical. Roberts spices things up a bit by introducing the other brothers who have also settled a bit to running the farm, and being the town lawyer and sheriff who will feature in the next three books. She further spices it up by giving the historic house a ghost from the time of the Civil War.

Did I enjoy revisiting the Nora Roberts' formula? Yes and No - 3.5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Read September 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First of the four MacKade books. (Also, the first I have bought off Nora Roberts' back list since her publisher started price gouging Spring 2010. These books are $5 each.)

The author creates her usual likeable characters in a strong small town setting, with plenty of romance and humor, all lightly flavored with Civil War history and a couple of ghosts.

This is probably my least favorite of the four, mostly because of the hero's behaviour in the last quarter of the book. SPOLIER ALERT: The heroine has some trouble and he makes it all about him, then turns ugly because she doesn't need him enough. Typically male, but I don't read romances for the typical. And it drives me crazy when no one calls him on his attitude.

Still, it's a quick and enjoyable read and will leave you eager for the next story.

5.0 out of 5 stars An oldie, but a goodie July 23, 2001
By Tara
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I am sure I came across this series from within a review I read. Thank you unknown reviewer! This is one of the best books (series) I have read. Rafe is a traditional male lead (bad boy), but the characters are fleshed out so well the old formula is still interesting. I read the series in order, but I am rereading out of order a month later and the books truly hold on their own. I really liked this book, but I can't say it is my favorite. They are all so good, I think of them as one continuous story. And wouldn't it be nice (and profitable) for them to be re-released together. I don't think in the last 6 years there have been that many better books. Once again...Why is this out of print? :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!! July 6, 1999

This wad a great way to start the series of Mackades! The characters were great and if you also liked this one, go get Perfect Neighbor and Inner Harbor, all by Nora Roberts, which I thought were very much like this book. I can't wait to read to rest of the series!

Bad boys, one and all! All four MacKade brothers were destined to be born troublemakers. Rafe had left town after hitting a man who abused his wife. He was afraid if he stayed he would end up just like him. Now Rafe is back. A success. He has purchased a Victorian house he wants to restore and turn into a Bed & Breakfast. It's reputed to be haunted. He knows it is.
He meets Regan and hires her to refurbish it with period furniture. It doesn't hurt that she is gorgeous and definitely has him interested. Regan is only interested in the job. Unfortunately, fighting a very strong attraction to Rafe was not in her plans, nor were her experiences with the ghosts in the house. She is fiercely independent and needs to make decisions step by step. Rafe simply informs her they are going to be lovers. That's when the sparks start flying.
I enjoyed reading this book, not just the spicy, combustible attraction between the two main characters but the relationship of the four brothers (specifically their desire to pound each other to a pulp for no specific reason). The subject of spousal abuse is covered in this book and only adds to the story and characters. This is book one of a four book series. I read and reviewed the other three. I recommend them.
