From the Back Cover

She's planted firmly on solid ground.
He's ready to sweep her off her feet.

The only man pragmatic Lilly Hart needs in her life is a six-year-old. Widowed for three years, Lilly has decided to leave the home of her intrusive in-laws to stand on her own. However, her in-laws find her new life as a cook at Lake Manawa utterly unsuitable for their grandson. When an argument ensues, a handsome stranger--who designs roller coasters, of all things--intercedes on her behalf. But Lilly is not about to get involved with any man, especially this cocky gentleman. Little does she know she is about to begin the ride of her life.

Filled with the sweet romance of summer, The Ride of Her Life will have you laughing out loud and sighing contentedly as you spend the summer of 1906 at Lake Manawa.

"With her expected wit and humor, Lorna Seilstad has penned another winner. Hang on and enjoy--this book is truly a fun ride."--Judith Miller, bestselling author of the Daughters of Amana series

The Ride of Her Life is a historical fiction novel by Lorna Seilstad, and the third in her Lake Manawa Summers series.

It's the summer of 1906 in Lake Manawa, Iowa, and Lilly Hart has no interest in any other man than her six-year-old son Levi.

Not only is she a self-determined woman who is still mourning her late husband of three years, but she also has no time for any courting nonsense. She's only recently decided to leave the home of her interfering, wealthy in-laws who have been pushing to send Levi to a boarding school - which she flatly refuses to do.

To make ends meet on her own, Lilly is working as a cook at a popular luncheon. Her in-laws find this unsuitable though, and begin to ask for custody of Levi. When a tall, handsome stranger who designs roller coasters, and is currently working on one in Lake Manawa, intercedes on her behalf, Lilly gets angry.

After all, she doesn't want or need to hide behind anyone else. Lilly can take care of Levi herself. She can provide him a home, like she always wanted as a child. It'll just take a lot of hard work.

What Lilly doesn't know is that the attractive stranger isn't easily swayed by her obstinate streak. He, in fact, is ready to take her on the ride of her life...

I've actually been interested in reading the Lake Manawa Summers series for quite a while, but this was my first opportunity to dive in. I would suggest that, if you're able, you read the series in order - Making Waves and then A Great Catch - as there are some spoilers for the earlier books in this one.

The Ride of Her Life felt fresh, fun, and as perfect for summertime as the sparkly waters of the lake itself! Lorna Seilstad offers up an outstanding amount of humor and energetic personalities from the get-go.

My Review
I had a short visit with my pastor today and he asked me if I would be blogging. I responded, not for today. Pastor Jose, you were right, today is a day for another posting :) This is my first book by Seilstad and the cover/title alone are enough to pull you in! This story takes place in 1906 and the roller coaster described was the first of its kind. It was fascinating to read the historical value of this book while enjoying the characters in Lilly's story!

Lilly is a widow, but she's also a former lady's maid and struggles to become truly independent for the first time. She has the determination and heart, but she has difficulties trusting others, even those closest to her. That initially made the story tough for me to enjoy because Lilly is so blessed with friends and family that love her, but after learning of her background I started to understanding why she is so fierce in not trusting anyone. What she must deal with in this story: a precocious 6 year old son who LOVES to play with insects and critters, two best friends who like to meddle in a loving way, rich in-laws who meddle in a negative way, a clueless yet sweet employee who needs constant patience in the kitchen, and Nick Perrin who instantly connects with Lilly yet must learn to win her heart over while trusting God to be in control.

Even though the romance in this story is sweet and even comical, my favorite scenes were with Lilly and her two best friends. They get one another, they support each other in everything, they pray for one another, and they are real with each other.

I liked the first two books in the Lake Manawa trilogy, but I confess that Marguerite's story was my favorite of the two. That first book really had the zip and fun characters that made it a perfect read...while book two had this as well, it didn't have it in the spades that book one did. Book Three contains that same zip. Ironically, it also brings back a character who figured somewhat prominently into the first book, Lily - Marguerite's former maid and lifetime friend.

This book is set several years after "Making Waves." Lily is a widow with a small son working hard to make ends meet in a diner on Lake Manawa. As she struggles to save enough funds to by a home for herself and her son, her in-laws are working hard to take her son away from her and ship him off to boarding school. Her father-in-law goes so far as to recruit a character from "Making Waves" to spy on Lily and disrupt her life and her budding relationship with Nick Perrin - the designer of a new roller coaster on Lake Manawa and a constant customer of the diner.

What really makes this series for Lorna Seilstad stand apart from others is that her bad guys aren't just bad...they are a bit sinister and toy with things that could ultimately seriously harm or even kill people. It certainly makes for an interesting read because after the first book in the trilogy, I was never really sure how far an antagonist would take their plot to disrupt lives...there is a lot of subtle manipulation and larger malevolence afoot.

In this book, I particularly liked Nick - he was very consistent and loyal throughout. He didn't really have a blow-up or get testy about much of anything. It was quite sweet the way he doted on Lily's son and was always read to help out.
