5.0 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time February 18, 2006
By S. Levy
We know that the Western story is a part of our culture. Like Star Trek that was more about the " last frontier" inside , our predjudices and fears, than going into space, The Rifleman is more than just a story about a rancher in New Mexico in the late 19th century who can shoot a rifle faster and more accurately than a man with a " six gun". The Rifleman was ahead of its time. It is also the store a single parent. The more interesting part is that the parent is a Father. The chemistry between Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford makes this show a must for anyone who likes the Western and the close relationship that the parent and child share. The show is great and can be watched over and over. Take a chance and get the dvd especially if you have never seen it before. It's entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only Western I liked April 29, 2006
The Rifleman was always a great show to watch. So far, I've enjoyed all of the boxed sets that I've bought. I don't usually watch westerns, but this became one of my favorite shows.

At $347 for a 4-DVD [20 episode] box-set ($238, used), it is understandable that SOME of us really want this TV-series.
There are six volumes available, a seventh was cancelled when the DVD-producer lost their rights to the show through a
quirk when all of the owners of FOUR STAR PRODUCTIONS up and died leaving the excellent program in some kind of legal-limbo!

The only affordable way to get a taste --just four episodes-- of this show is to buy a similar title The Rifleman, Volume 1--
not to be confused with the OTHER Volume 1, which is $222.

Stars Chuck Conners as a {6'6"}widdower, and Johnny Crawford as his pre-teen son.

The show was always #1 in its timeslot, and the guest-stars went on to many great shows, later, such as BONANZA.

Will somebody PLEASE pick up the dropped ball (Conners played pro-ball) and re-issue these programs-- with the original opening
