5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most amazing songs ever., May 13, 2009

This review is from: The Rip (MP3 Download)
"The Rip" starts off as a gentle, Cowboy Junkies-style lull.

Then, something sinister swims beneath its surface. That something rises up, with a glint of a sunlit fin, sinks away, and then...then...

What happens next is, in my opinion, one of the greatest and most startling progressions in all of recorded music, right up there with Ernest Phipps and the Holiness Singers' "Shine on Me." With a vocal note held so long I suspect it may have been looped, the listener moves seamlessly into something entirely different--into something irresistible.

This song is one for the ages--put it with Soltero's "Honey Say It," and you definitely have two strong contenders for Best Song of 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Different, but it's still Portishead, July 8, 2008
This review is from: The Rip (MP3 Download)
Have you listened to the new Beck, Modern Guilt. Both the new Portishead and Beck are very nostalgic for recovering downbeat addicts ready to slip back into a happy gloominess again at any time. I've actually turned to nearly complete pop over the past 2 1/2 years to gain a fresh perspective on the music I truly love. I have also found a new band (Swimming In) to love that reminds me Beth's darkness, however their or her delivery is much more insolent and bright... I'm loving it! Looks like the old bands are back and the new bands are getting better!
