4.0 out of 5 stars Melodic pirate, I mean power, metal April 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Released in 1998, The Rivalry was the 10th studio from metal's original swashbucklers Running Wild. At this point in their career, the German band had settled into something of a formula (that formula is roughly Judas Priest + Captain Morgan's), so The Rivalry wasn't much different than the band's previous releases.

Formulaic or not, The Rivalry is a very fun album, and has all of the Running Wild trademarks - pirate themes, galloping leads, catchy melodies, marching rhythms, shout-along choruses and of course Rolf Kasparak's unique vocals. There are a couple of 8-minute epics ("Ballad of William Kidd" and "War and Peace"), but most of the songs are 4-5 minute, fast-paced, up-tempo melodic power metal numbers. What's not to love?

The Rivalry is another very solid, very enjoyable melodic power metal album from Running Wild, and one that ought to please most fans of bands like Grave Digger, Pretty Maids, Sabaton and the like.

Edition Notes: The Rivalry is also available with the band's Victory and Brotherhood albums - all three in digipacks - in the Legendary Tales box set.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last great Running Wild album October 5, 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album is a great piece of work.... starts off with a cool instrumental, and then proceeds to the title track which has a nice chorus but is kinda recycled from their song Metalhead. The album has got some memorable epics namely Ballad of William Kidd, Return of the Dragon, Fire & Thunder, and War & Peace. some other highlights are the title song, Poison, Man on the Moon which has got a very nice riff. Sad that this band went downhill fast after this release. This one is my favorite Running Wild album along with Death or Glory, and Black Hand Inn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good Running Wild album March 23, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This was one of the first Running Wild album I heard and I fell in love with it right away. Its one of the earliest albums with the "newer" sound that the band developed over the years, starting with Masquerade. Black Hand Inn was a traditional Running Wild with a little new and experimental ideas but Masquerade just marks the beginning of a new RW era. I think Masquerade was rushed because it came out only one year after Black Hand Inn and sounds very different. The Rivalry on the other hand was released 3 years after Masquerade, and sounds like it too but better and more fresh. So I think Rolf and the guys had more free time to come up with new material. It was also a change in record company so.

Anyway lets talk more about The Rivalry. It starts off with a badass epic intro and then rushes into the title track wich is one of the most awesome RW tracks I've ever heard. I use to say this to new people, if you like this track, you will worship Running Wild, and every time I had said that, the guy or girl that I have showed the song too have been enchanted by this great German band. The same thing happened when I have given them the song Ballad Of William Kidd wich is also one of their best.

Other great songs here are Return Of The Dragon, Firebreather, Adventure Galley and the finale War & Peace.
You can really feel the pirate history when you listen to this CD. Just about everything is awesome here, the music, the solos, vocals, lyrics..

This is a great start if you are new but also an album you have to own if you are into Running Wild.
I also recently read in an interview with Rolf Kasparek that all the old albums never will be printed again.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Pirate's ship has got a hole May 13, 2001

It's just a poor remake of "Masquerade" (the previous one). All the same ideas, but worse. The remarkable instrumental skills are still there, but... no spark!
