8 of 8 people found the following review helpful By Dr. Oceanfront HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on March 2, 2014
Format: Hardcover
This is book is more of a piece of art, done in watercolors, then just a book. The pictures change colors with the seasons.

The book follows the four seasons, each season with a few lines and four simple water colors per page, depicting a short story. You need to look closely at the art and the images in them to notice the stories progression.

The simple pictures range from greenish (trees along the river...eventually shedding their leaves, to yellowish, where we see a boat come into view in the last panel, to brownish colors where we watch the passage of a boat and family as they follow, the flow of the river, color changes depicting the change of seasons. We see a calf being born in the cold, and the splendor of animals migrating.

There are pages with a person riding his bike, and a page where he meets the tin folks. We see dogs, rabbits, a father and son, a carnival and even a tiger as you follow the pictures and the passage of time.

The landscapes, four to a page, are simple, yet truly outstanding as you follow the character moving through them.

This would be a good book for a young reader, yet any adult will enjoy the pictures.

When I first opened the book, I was a bit underwhelmed. Then I sat down and watched the progression of the pictures and became totally absorbed. How delightful! I got this after seeing a view on BrainPickings.com, which has fantastic book reviews. They highly recommended this one, and did not lead me wrong.

Another heartwarming picture book from the Enchanted Lion... this time illustrated by Italian watercolor artist Alessandro Sanna. I was completely captivated by the images of biking through the stormy night skies, as they reminded me that despite the occasional cruelties like bad weather, life has beauty and endless qualities. The story is lovely and the paintings are inspirational. I am working on improving my watercolor technique with Zoltan Szabo Paints Landscapes: Advanced Techniques in Watercolor and think The River is a great look at similar techniques.

To me, this book is not only beautiful, absorbing, and entrancing, but it shows the best use of watercolor I've ever seen. Highly recommended for any visual type, those who enjoy "making up stories" to pictures, and watercolor artists.

Alessandro Sanna uses watercolors to illustrate the 4 seasons and tell his stories. Beautifully done. As you look at the lovely watercolors, you can feel yourself being part of the story. I love it.
