It is rare to find an collection of songs from a single album that begs to be listened to many times as to wrap one's mind around the sonic journey that presents itself here. I am a confessed music fanatic who scans through all the new releases and have found of recent that most of the new music is a little under ripend to be nice. The music of The River Empires is ready for enjoyment. If you are a fan of Sarah McLachlan, Chet Atkins, Radiohead, Brandy Carlisle, Elbow or Paul Simon, this should interest you. The combination of Bluegrass and Emo is done to perfection. The soundscapes are vast and the moods are varied. Fairly unique these days.

As a soundtrack album, this easily makes my list of must-owns. As a musical artist's debut, I also give it a warm welcome to my music collection, and hope this band is around for a long time. Here's why:

1. This album is a refreshing blend of many different genres, including bluegrass, soundscape, rock, world, and general folksy themes throughout. But that's just from a quick listen, and I'm sure there's much more packed in this offering.

2. This is no joke/half-baked album. There's some solid and thoughtful music here. Some songs are in the vein of other formidable artists, and quite honestly, make the older bands sound like imitations themselves. There's a bit of Decemberists, Radiohead, and maybe even a Queen feel to the music at different times in the album. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound like a tribute album or anything. I'm just trying to convey the feel of some of this stuff.

3. Although, at times, it may strain the limits of coherence and flow, the sheer variety of this album gives me great expectations about the future of this band. They've got a lot going for them in terms of versatility. I think there's plenty of original music where this came from.

In contrast to all the praise I have for this album, I must say that it's not "easy listening." It can be fairly tedious listening, if you're not prepared for it. Take a listen for yourself on their website (look for "The River Empires" on bandcamp DOT com). Hopefully, you enjoy it as much as I am!

I don't know where to begin with this album. Lovely lyrics, Beautiful harmonies, the mix is great. Think Death Cab + Straylight + a bit of Danny Elfman =]
