“THE ROAD BACK, A Journey of Grace and Grit,” is the story of Matt Miller, 20, a University of Virginia student and member of the college triathlon club.He and two classmates had just pedaled up a mountain pass. Matt was on top of the world in so many ways, in love, with dreams of attending medical school, so fit his resting pulse was 42! And then, as he cycled along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, he fell, face first, into an oncoming Porsche at 40 miles an hour. He broke every bone in his face, suffered massive brain injury. The real story is not what happened, but what happened after. Vitez shares with readers the incredible, humbling, miraculous story of Matt’s survival and recovery --all the way back to medical school and an Ironman Triathlon. It is a story, truly, of grace and grit, as gripping as it is inspiring. Ride along!
Vitez first wrote about Matt for his newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, in a three-part series. He received such an overwhelming response, and continued to watch Matt recover in the most astonishing ways that he decided to take a leave, immerse himself in Matt's life, and write this book. THE ROAD BACK is not only about a young man’s drive to reclaim his life, but about the the people who rode with him, rescued him, helped him heal, and saw up close his amazing comeback.
"My mission as a writer has always been to celebrate life, to lift the human spirit when I can. I tried to do that with this book," said Vitez, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1997 for a series of stories about end of life care.
"One of the things I love best about this book," said Vitez, "is that this was a kid who had been given everything – an affluent and loving family, a sharp mind, terrific athleticism -- and he recognized he'd been given these gifts and felt a responsibility to make the most of them. And when adversity struck, he doubled down, drew from deep within himself, and grew even more determined to fulfill the promise of his life, to make the most of his gifts and this greatest gift, his second chance. In an age of greed and selfishness, especially among many of the wealthy and privileged, I think this is very affirming for readers." "Also," Vitez added, "I have made it my mission as a writer to celebrate life, to look for the good in people, to inspire when I can. And I found so much goodness in this book. This story really is the Perfect Storm in reverse. Everything had to work perfectly for Matt Miller to have any chance of survival -- everything -- and it did! The emergency responders, the doctors and nurses, his family, the community all delivered flawlessly for Matt. We hear so much negativity in America today, much of it justified, but in this book America shines. I love the family history, showing where Matt got his grit and work ethic. I love his mother's humility and strength. I love the goodness of the people all around him, from the Harrises to the Vanguard crew to Mark Bernardino. This book is my canvas to paint my view of America, a true and remarkable story." Even though Vitez has been a writer and journalist for over 30 years, and won a Pulitzer Prize, and authored a previous and very popular book, Rocky Stories, he received little interest from the major New York publishers. The publishing industry is even in worse shape, and going through more upheaval, than his own newspaper industry. So rather than go with a small, regional publisher, in which he knew from previous experience that he would have to do most of the marketing anyway, he decided to publish the book himself. Technology has changed so much, making this possible. He used CreateSpace, a print-on-demand publisher, to design and print the paperback, which is available at Amazon.com, and Vitez created e-book versions for Kindle, Nook and Ipad.
"This has been a fascinating experience, a great adventure for me, and in a way I feel like a pioneer," Vitez said.
Many have raved about The Road Back. Here are four short reviews:

I have been following the story of Matt Miller since Mr. Vitez first started writing about him. As an avid cyclist myself, and someone who worked for many years at a medical school, I found reading the book compelling, emotional and inspirational. I truly could not put the book down and I even knew how it ended! The story of the Miller family and all the doctors, nurses, friends and others who joined together in Matt's recovery was truly astounding. It is a must read for anyone who ever wondered about the power of the human spirit.
Michael Vitez has written a masterpiece. The book is compelling and almost impossible to put down. It is a parent's nightmare to get a call that your child is near death with little hope of recovery. You are left with chills as Mr. Vitez makes the story come to life. Mr. Vitez beautifully weaves the accident and the recovery with profiles of the incredible family and the devoted girlfriend. You will feel inspired when you finish the book and longing for more. There is something for everyone in this book and I enthusiastically recommend it!
This is a very compelling and touching story of triumph over adversity and personal hardship. Michael Vitez has done and excellent job in capturing the emotions and feelings of all of the participants and keeps you emotionally involved in the story from beginning to end.
I was familiar with the story before reading this book, but The Road Back helped fill in the blanks and provide an incredibly compelling account of the details of Matt's accident and subsequent recovery. The author does a great job alternating between bringing the reader into the story - you feel as if you're in the hospital room witnessing events as they unfold - and providing pertinant background information and context. This is an incredible story that anyone can relate to. As a parent I was incredibly moved hearing what the Millers went through. As a person, I was inspired by Matt's accomplishments. This story helps to remind us how fragile life can be, and to put things in perspective in our day to day lives. I highly recommend The Road Back.
Great story writing is good but not great. I enjoyed it because I am a triathlete, but I don't think it would be as interesting if you are not an athlete. Well done but no literary masterpiece.
I could not put my Kindle down while reading this book on vacation(except to wipe away some tears). I really would like to thank the Miller family for sharing such an incredible story and thank you Mr. Vitez for writing and publishing it. The courage, determination, love and loyalty of everyone involved (especially Matt) is such an inspiration and a truly remarkable example of the human spirt and will. Everyone should read this book! Thank you again for sharing this journey! Best wishes to Matt and Emily on the next chapter of their lives together!
The story of Matt Miller and the journey he and his family embarked on in the face of sudden and terrible tragedy is both amazing and inspiring. The Miller family and their close friends allow readers a peek into their world as they face sadness, challenges and many, many triumphs. My heart grew with every page, with every miracle, and I highly recommend this book. Buy one for yourself, each member of your family, your best friends, colleagues, anyone who you are grateful to have in your life. The gift of this book expresses gratitude in a way words never can.
As with most books, I tore through it within days of its Kindle release. I was horrified, shocked and hooked after the first page! The author managed to take details of someone's life and turn it into a story that is a true page turner.
Not only is it a story about a young man who has a horrific bicycle accident but about the challenges he faced, the obstacles he overcame, and how the love and support of his family helped him through. By the end of the story, I felt like I really knew the Miller family and some of the other key people in Matt's life. What an amazing young man Matt is and I wish him much success in the next chapters of his life.
Thank you Mike for writing Matt's story and to the Miller family for allowing him to share this story with others.
