Dan Schell's debut novel is an addictive, highly-readable jaunt through the midwestern bars and back alleys where up and coming rock and roll bands are forced to tread. It would be difficult to avoid a reference to Spinal Tap when discussing Numb Skull, the fictitious band in this story, and even the band is aware of some similarities, but this book is in no way a rip off of anything you're seen or read before. It is, however, a completely realistic look of a band on the road, and more than a couple events in the story are ones I lived through when my band toured over a decade ago, almost to the letter. I suspect that is why Spinal Tap is so revered (and often feared) by bands; it's too true sometimes, in the worst possible ways.

This first novel is definitely worth picking up, if for nothing more than to say you were there on the ground floor when a budding novelist made his first notch in the literary world's fat-pants belt. I laughed out loud more than a few times, and I certainly felt for the characters at other times. Enjoyable, real, and ultimately satisfying.

The Road to Fluffer is a fun ride! The bars Numb Skull played at, brought back many memories of going to local shows. It felt like I was right there following them on tour. The characters are well developed and likable. You start wondering how they will ever make it to Fluffer and be successful, then little things along the way bring it all together. There are some interesting characters and bands, that when the book ends, you are sad it is all over. I hope someday there is a sequel. Darrell, the writer following Numb Skull, has a troubled marriage, and you really feel for him. It keeps you holing out hope that his personal life will get better. You really feel for these characters. It is an entertaining story, and if you like music or ever followed local bands around you will love The Road to Fluffer! There are many laughs along the way.

I wasn't sure what to expect since I'm not very knowledgeable about heavy metal bands, but the author kept the story line entertaining with just enough twists and turns that made me eager to turn the page! His eye for detail of every place they encountered made me feel like I was right there with them. I felt disappointment when the story ended as I found myself cheering on the Numb Skulls and their succession of bad luck! I thought Darrell was an intriguing character and I was happy with his decision at the end. I hope it evolves into a continued story line, and a second book, as I can't wait to see where this new arrangement takes them! Good read and definitely "All Right!", as Chester would say.

Loved it. Shades of High Fidelity, Almost Famous, and Anvil! The Story of Anvil...but with a distinct midwestern working-class musician view. I feel like I've known all these characters and places, which makes it that much more fun to be on the journey with them.

The Road to Fluffer is a fun read that follows Darrell, a journalist, as he follows the band Numb Skull as they attempt to prove their worth on tour in anticipation of getting a deal with Fluffer, the energy-drink-company turned music-label. We've all heard the glory-stories of famous bands on the road. But for a beginning band, especially, the road is fraught with peril. What will the venues/promotors be like when you get there? Will you make a good connection with the bands you are playing with, or will you be snubbed? And how will Darrell be able to meet his writing deadlines while he's questioning whether or not he's actually managed to avoid the cubicle, sell-out lifestyle in his choice of career, and while his wife insists on making life even more difficult?

Numb Skull is a metal band. Personally, metal is a music I could live without hearing most've the time. However, my lack of appreciation for metal did nothing to hinder my enjoyment in reading this book. If anything, a few of the music descriptions that referenced other metal bands went over my head, but not to the degree where it hindered my reading. This book made me laugh, and I connected with the characters, through victories, woes, and unusual events. Definitely worth the read.
