Review

"Jimmy Buffett should set this tropical tale to music! The best Key West stories can only be written by those who have lived here, and Reisig expertly captures the steamy, seedy, beautiful allure of the islands. "The Road to Key West" takes readers on a hysterical journey through the humidity and humanity that only exists in the lower latitudes. And much like the Keys in the 1970s, it's a hell of a trip.
--Mandy Bolen, The Key West Citizen

I purchased this book on spec. I'd never heard of the author, Michael Reisig, and I am a voracious consumer of "south Florida" novels and authors: Hiaasen, Edna Buchanan, James W. Hall, Laurence Shames, Paul Levine, William Lashner's, Tom Corcoran, Randy Wayne White, Tim Dorsey and several others whose names I can't recall off the top of my head. I have all their novels in my library, 1st Ed., hard., among the 2500 books I have saved over the years. I've only saved the books I have enjoyed.

Nevertheless, I thought I'd take a chance on this Reisig guy because for each of the last 21 years I've taken a 10 day vacation in Key West and I've gotten to know the town pretty well. I love the place and they are my favorite 10 days of the year. This is the one vacation I take by myself without my lovely wife, so I know I will not be wrong for at least 10 days. Consequently, I greatly enjoy reading novels set there.

So I was stunned by Reisig's superior writing and descriptive skill! I couldn't believe I'd never run into him before and he's just published his third Key West fiction novel. He is so good that, tentatively, I have to put home near the top of my pantheon of Florida authors, subject to reading his 2nd and 3rd novels in this series.

Reisig writes with the poetry of James Hall and the wry humor of Laurence Shames. His satire is not quite up to the level of Carl Hiaasen's but his tone compares very favorably to William Lashner's. He's a little thin on plot, but this is his first work of fiction (I believe). I love the two main characters and it appears they will continue into his second novel, which I have already purchased.

Just finished The Road to Key West. Very fun road, indeed. Kansas and Will were creative and fearless, and the many antagonists whom continuously tormented them all came together in an exciting conclusion on Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas.

The many different adventures the boys either pursued or found themselves embroiled in produced a string of vignettes that tightened into a Gordian knot of excitement. The plot was a combination of Buffett's Where is Joe Merchant? and Hiaasen's early character-driven stories that kept readers gripping their paperbacks with white knuckles.

Hard to catch a breath between adventures as Kansas and Will ricocheted from the Florida Keys, to Costa Rica, to Cuba, and many other settings in between. Very entertaining and a special joy to anyone who, like me, was lucky enough to live in the Keys in the 70's, which is when and where the story was set. Well done, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

"The Road to Key West" takes you on a crazy, intriguing trip back to the 1970s, when boomers could find adventure lurking around every curve. In this fast-paced tale of great friends living on the edge in the Florida Keys, Reisig lets you relive an amazing era. It's easy to get entangled in their troubles, and even easier to drift off into your own past, recalling your own great experiences of the day. Why not spend some hours enjoying a time when the responsibilities of adulthood never crossed your mind. And don't worry . . . though you'll be transfixed in the telling of their dangerous journey, you can go along in the safety of your favorite easy chair. This book is simply FUN!

I've been a fan of Michael Reisig's work for quite a few years, and his latest "The Road to Key West" is fantastic. I spent quite a bit of time in the Florida Keys, and his descriptive writing style brings you right there. I could almost smell the salt air.

A fun ride throughout as you follow Kansas and Will on all sorts of adventures and crazy situations, whether they were looking for treasure, getting tangled up with modern-day 'pirates' or competing for the love of a beautiful woman. It definitely made me wish I was in the Carribean!

Kudos to the author on another great read!

Although the beginning of the story had me absolutely in stitches, the constant barage of unpredictable circumstances was overdone. The story was interesting at first but I started to lose interest in it's characters. Light reading for those who want to read something to take your mind off of your troubles.

Flash back to a different time. Old Florida, before the tourist industry homogenized it. Boats, scuba, tropical fish, treasure. A good read.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book because it seemed real. They were having adventures that actual people could have in the Keys and they were relatable situations. The writer also captured moments that only someone with Keys experience could capture. The second half of the book seemed as if he had run out of the real, so he switched to the unreal and the surreal. While a fun read overall, I wish the entire book had kept going the way the book started.
