I was a Bass Player years ago and just recently, my son decided to pick up playing guitar...well, long story short - I played his guitar as much as he did. I wanted to get him - and I - something to learn from and found the Rock House website

and what a blessing it was. I ordered this DVD (in addition to a few more) and have not been disappointed. The level of instruction is perfect for the lesson levels and in no time at all, my son and I have become better players.

I know Private Lessons are available in most areas, but I think about it this way. Spend a couple of dollars on these DVD's, gain enough knowledge/experience using these and THEN go to a Private Instructor down the road. Private lessons can cost 30.00 a half an hour and your first year alone can cost you upwards of 1400.00. Why not spend 100.00 ordering EVERY Rock Guitar/Heavy Metal/Hands of Steel DVD's, get all of that knowledge and then down the road - use a Private Instructor to teach more intricate stuff. It's about value for me.

Speaking as a parent as well, you never know if your kids will stick with it, so I'd rather spend money on this up front, than spend the money for a private instructor to find out they lose interest in playing. Plus, with these DVD's, my son is hooked and looks forward to practicing every day. He hasn't stopped or lost interest in a little over 3 months.

THe WebSite supports the products in addition to supporting the player themselves. Supporting documents/tracks/tabs/forums will help every student of RockHouse develop into a formidable player. This is what surprised me the most. After buying the products, I continue to learn from John McCarthy and from other instructors/students through the WebSite.

This is more like a begginer DVD. If you don't know the scale shapes, then this DVD might help. If you know the shape but don't understand what it means or want to learn how to use it....NOT THE DVD FOR YOU!!!

He says: "Here's the shape"
Then plays it slow....
Then shreds all over the fretboard without any hint as to why he chose those notes or the rhyme or reason for what he's doing.

He shows how to make barre chordes and some finger "exercises".

If this is intermediate, I'd hate to see begginer...."Um der...these are strings...ummmmm, the vibrations make sounds....ummmmm....errrrr"

This DVD is for the guy who wants to start playing.

I play a little guitar, and I bought this for my 15 year old metal head son who is just starting guitar, but pretty naturally inclined..but was getting frustrated and wanting to move on to another level. Also, he has very little tolerance for actually sitting down and learning things from a dvd or book, etc. He is SO IN to this dvd! I've got to say also, it is excellent as far as the close-ups and actually showing you the technique in a very easy way. The guy does not try to show off and just breeze through things like most do. He is a fantastic teacher. I highly recommend this dvd! Way worth it.

This series is incredible and indispensable for anyone wanting to learn the basics so that they can then create their own music. One caveat: be careful that the written instructions appear in your copy, especially if you purchase it used; I've had reorder twice due to the free pamphlet, with the tablature, being missing (but this is no criticism of this product or of this particular vendor).
