Book Description

May 15, 2012 8 and up The Celestine Chronicles (Book 1)770L (What's this?)
The annual Great Quest is about to be announced in Quendel, a task that will determine the future of Marcus and the other boys from the village who are coming of age. The wizard Zyll commands them to find the Rock of Ivanore, but he doesn’t tell them what the Rock is exactly or where it can be found. Marcus must reach deep within himself to develop new powers of magic and find the strength to survive the wild lands and fierce enemies he encounters as he searches for the illusive Rock. If he succeeds, he will live a life of honor; if he fails, he will live a life of menial labor in shame. With more twists and turns than a labyrinth, and a story in which nothing is at it seems, this tale of deception and discovery keeps readers in suspense until the end.

Middle readers will find that The Rock of Ivanore fits nicely among the traditional fantasies they so enjoy. They will also appreciate its fresh and inventive take on the genre.

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE LAURISA WHITE REYES

1. What did you most like to do when you were a child?

The same things I enjoy doing now - reading and writing. I wrote my first poem when I was five. It just came to me in the middle of the night. I got out of bed, fished a scrap of poster board from my trash can, and scribbled it out with a crayon. Growing up I wrote poetry, short stories and plays. I used to coax my brothers and cousins into performing them for our parents. And I have always been a voracious reader.

2. When you were a child did you ever have a moment when you decided that you were going to be a writer when you grew up?

I think I was about fourteen when I knew I wanted to be an author someday. I set a goal to publish my first novel by the time I was thirty. I overshot that goal by thirteen years, but I finally did it.

3. What books influenced you most when you were growing up?

My favorite series for years was the TRIXIE BELDEN MYSTERIES. I still have the entire set of books in a box in my garage. Some of my other favorites included ROBINSON CRUSOE, OF MICE AND MEN, GONE WITH THE WIND, WUTHERING HEIGHTS and ROOTS. Heavy duty stuff for a kid, I know, but I loved them. Still do.

4. When you went to college, were you already pursuing a writing career?

At first I actually wanted to be a geneticist. I lasted five minutes in my first genetics course and promptly changed my major to English. I never lost sight of the fact that I wanted to write. After college, I spent the next thirteen years writing for magazines and newspapers, but the deadlines finally burned me out. Six years ago I quit all that to focus on writing fiction, which was what I really wanted to do all along anyway.

5. What gave you the idea for THE ROCK OF IVANORE?

I've always enjoyed reading to my kids at night before they go to bed. When my oldest son was about 8 years old, he asked me to make up a story instead of read one. So I told him about an enchanter's apprentice who botched his spells. Each night my son would tell me what he wanted to hear that night, whether it was dragons, or magic, or sword fighting, and I'd weave it into the story. Eventually I started writing it down. A year later I had a completed manuscript.

6. How did your life change when you got married and had children? Did it make it easier or harder to find time to write?

My husband and I have been married almost twenty years now. We have five children ranging in age from 18 down to 4 years. When my oldest child was small, I'd sit her on my lap, hold her steady between my elbows, and type on the computer at the same time. Later, as more kids came, night time was my time. Most of my writing was done between 10p and 2am. When my babies woke in the middle of the night, I get up to care for them, and then stay up an extra hour to write. But I was younger then. Now that I'm older, I'm tired. I can't stay up past eleven or I fall asleep at the computer. So now I work in the morning before my youngest child wakes up. Once he's up, my writing day is over. The rest of the day belongs to him. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

7. What other hobbies do you enjoy?

I do have a few other hobbies, though I do them sporadically. I enjoy digital scrapbooking (I don't have the talent or patience for traditional scrapbooking). I do a lot of family history and have traced my genealogy back to seventeenth century New England. I also have a passion for ancient history, something I inherited from my father who knows pretty much everything about it. I also inherited my love of writing from him. He has written several amazing novels himself, and now that he is retired is finally making time to pursue publication.

8. When is your next book going to be in book stores?

My first novel, THE ROCK OF IVANORE, will be (was) released on May 15, 2012. The sequel, THE LAST ENCHANTER, will come out sometime in 2013. There may also be a young adult paranormal in the works, but that is still up in the air.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put the book down...... May 11, 2012
By LM
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just finished reading the Rock of Ivanore. I couldn't put the book down. The author brought the story and characters to life. I could envision the characters - the boys, Master Zyll, the walking staff (Xerxes), fire breathing dragons, the cyclops, the Forrest, the villages, castles, etc. The story played out in my mind as I was reading it. This book can certainly be made into a movie. Also nice was that the author explained how the story came about. I was curious about that as I was reading the book. Can't wait to read more books from this author. Also was very impressed with the speed of delivery of this book. It was delivered in one day. Wow!

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute Coming of Age Fantasy - But a Bit Confusing January 10, 2013
By Erica
Format:Kindle Edition
The Rock of Ivanore by Laurisa White Reyes was a cute coming of age fantasy. It had a charming cast of characters and a rather simplistic plot.

The beginning was a bit confusing to me - there were two points of view, but the way the other was integrated was a bit confusing. I didn't feel like the voices were different enough, and it was very jarring because I was confused as to who this other random person was. The story did come together, and then the story made a lot more sense.

The plot is a ton of fun - the happy go lucky, questish type. There were a lot of instances where I felt things were too simple. Everything seemed to simply fall into the characters paths, and given the nature of their quest, that seemed a bit unrealistic. I did like how there was an element of mystery that followed the entire plot - you weren't ever completely sure where the plot would take you next.

The characters were a ton of fun. Xerxes was a hoot. I loved his snarky comments he threw in everywhere they went. Jayson was another favorite character of mine - I loved that you never could quite figure him out. I really liked Bryn's transformation of character throughout the book. A lot of the more minor characters are what made the book for me, like Vos was in such a small part of the book but he was awesome!

Fans of middle grade fantasy will definitely enjoy this one. I had a little trouble getting into it, but once I did the pages just flew by. I wasn't completely content with the plot, but for me, the characters forgave that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, enjoyable fantasy read. November 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I love fantasy books for young readers. They make for such light, easy and entertaining reads. The Rock of Ivanore by author Laurisa White Reyes was no exception.

This was a really fun and feel-good book to read. I read it in one night because I just wanted to find out how everything will turn out. The writing is simple and easy to follow. It had adventure and magic. It talked about friendship, love, honor, and loyalty, but it also had some dark moments. There have been reviews that the story, events and situations in the book aren't something new, and it's quite true but that didn't really bother me. It was still exciting and entertaining. This book would be great for young readers before they get on the hard core fantasy stuff. It's great for adult readers, too, if they just want a relatively quick and fun fantasy experience.

(I received a review copy in exchange for an honest review.)
