I bought this book when I decided to do something about my life-long love of rocking horses; buy an old horse and restore it. This book gave me a lot of the information I needed.

It's a large book, with space for lots of beautiful colour photos of old rocking horses, and other moving horse toys such as pull and push horses. There are sections on the early origins of rocking horses, the important English, European, American, and Australian makers. There is a section on conservation, restoration and reproductions.

If you are trying to find information on some particular aspect of rocking horses, it is likely to be here. Though out of print and expensive, all the collectors/restorers I know have a copy.

It is not quite perfect; to my mind, Patricia Mullins does not give enough space to the great English makers, F.H. Ayres and the various Lines family firms. I'd like an extensive, easy to use chart on identification. But these are minor cavils.

If you are a rocking horse enthusiast, you need this book.

this is a must have book for anyone interested in the history of this toy. For me, as a restorer, it has been really valuable for identifying manufacturers and for returning the ponies and their mechanisms to as close to factory as I can get them

This is a well presented and comprehensive text. It is a must for collectors, specially by Patricia Mullins' fellow Australians

Before the publication of Patricia Mullin's book on toy horses, only a rarefied few were passionate about rocking horses, and the choice of horses to buy was much greater than now, and prices low. Combing antique and junk shops often yielded lovely large horses, but then Patricia Mullins wrote her book, and it started to change.
There is not that much information on the classic English rocking horse, sadly, maybe as there is very little concrete information available in museums and libraries-the usual places for research.
The book is lovely to own, however, even if the price is hefty. [but do shop around- rocking horse dealers feel they have a captive audience and charge accordingly]
There is a lot of information on toy horses worldwide, but personally I would like to have seen much more information on the classic English rocking horse, specifically Bow- rocker horses. -For Australian readers and those from Germany there is much more information provided.

The book brought rocking horses to a more mainstream audience, and prices have risen significantly after it's publication for even mediocre rocking horses. If you own a special rocking horse, keep him, as he will doubtless rise in value!
Is the book worth buying? for aficionados, yes, but do try to shop around.[this book has been available as a ''remainder'' for £25]
For those with a passing interest, the price could be offputting, with very high prices approaching £150 being asked!
