By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. The Rolling Stones were one of the greatest rock’n’roll bands of the 20th Century. Initially a blues covers band who gradually integrated themselves into the so-called ‘British Invasion’ (of the American charts), the Stones developed into the only group capable of rivalling the Beatles in the late 60s. By comparison to the Stones, the Beatles were seen as a clean cut pop group who avoided dealing with the sexual revolution and were more easily appreciated by parents.
