This book is the approved English translation of the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal, containing all of the prayers that a Catholic priest needs to say the mass in English. With the revised English translation of 2011, dozens of missals have been published by different companies in recent years, but the Catholic Book Publishing Company continues to provide the most affordable and practically usable edition of them all. This product happens to be the chapel edition, a smaller version of the large missal that CBPC publishes for use in parishes, and it's quite satisfying. There are certainly more beautiful and artsy missals from other publishers, but this one is the most affordable and best suited for practical use, being rough and ready in missionary fashion. It has ample color-coded ribbons and built-in tabs (also color-coded) to facilitate easy use by priests in addition to very readable black and red print. It lays flat. As an improvement on the old Sacramentary, it also features full-color artwork in a more classical style than the postmodern abstract illustrations of the previous edition, making it quite pleasant to read. Although pricier editions like the Magnificat and Liturgical Press missals may have nicer materials and fancier artwork, all of the missals published by other companies are inferior for practical use to this one. Many of those other missals have print that is hard to read, poor layout of liturgical texts, a lack of tabs or sufficient ribbons, and are so narrow or tightly bound that they refuse to sit flat on the altar or a missal stand. If you want practicality and usability, rather than an awkward book that looks good from the pews, this is the one to get for your priest or chapel. It is also probably the most commonly used missal publisher in U.S. parishes. Just remember to buy the larger edition (not the chapel edition I'm reviewing here) from the publisher if you want something for the main sanctuary in your parish.

This edition of the Chapel Missal is excellent. The print is very clear. The tabs are in the right places. It is very helpful that the four Eucharistic prayers for Special Occasions/Needs are also tabbed.
This edition is half the price of the same book produced for UK, Aus, etc. However, it does not have particular national feasts/solemnities that purchasers from those countries might need.

A sturdy, handsome volume (except for the cheaply attached ribbons). The stays open easily and the print is large. Recommended.

The Roman Missal, 3rd Chapel Edition is exactly as described. The book itself is high quality. What is really important is the contents. The Missal returns language in the creed to a correct translation. "Credo" is now correctly translated as "I believe", first person singular as it should be. Also corrected was the liturgical use of various names of Jesus where "Lamb of God you take away the sin of the world." should be said. Though Jesus Christ is correctly reverenced as "Son of Mary, "Prince of Peace" and, by the Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus, more than 40 other things, it is in point of fact the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

I received my new Missal 2 days ago. It is a beautiful volume and I will enjoy celebraing with it. I'm fine with the translation and its faithfulness to the original Latin but it does sound stuffy and awkward in places. My criticism regards the art throughout the text. With so much medieval and early church art as well as the beautiful line drawings from the past not to mention Icons, why was the choice made and who made it to use predominantly renaissance style art? I, for one, intensely dislike art of that period, its just too "frilly", even effeminate. The characters appear to be having seizures or have spina bifida. It just does not inspire me at all. And the photograph of the interior of the Cathedral in Canada and of St. Peter's Dome just appear out of place - Photos of buildings in an Altar Missal? The cover of the book is maroon. All of our other liturgical books are red. This doesn't match at all.
The musical notations, in places, seem crammed into too small a space. (Take a look at the Easter Alleluia.) The new Exsultet will certainly be a challenge to the many musically ignorant celebrants and deacons next Easter. I can hardly wait. Lastly, with all the obsession with Latin, there is not even a Latin translation of the Mass in the book. Addendum: I have now used the Missal for Mass (1st Sunday of Advent) and the cover is beginning to bow / curve upward. this is very disappointing considering the cover of the chapel sized Sacramentary didn't bow or curve in the 24 years I used it. We need a new revised new Missal!!! Pax et bonum.
Hi There! A year has passed and I would like to edit my original review of this Missal. I simply don't like it. I have grown accustomed to the overstuffed verbage and endless sentences.

This edition of the Roman Missal is superb. And this particular one had the name of St. Joseph in the Eucharistic Prayers. My only hesitation in giving it five stars is that while the layout is excellent, it lacks, IMOHO, the beauty and quality of a Missal from MIdwest Theological or Magnificat, but it's much better than Lit Press and on par with Or better than LTP. Other than that, I highly recommend it. It's more reasonably priced than some of the aforementioned ones also.
