Editorial Reviews

João Gilberto remains something of a perplexing enigma. A reluctant star of a musical genre he helped pioneer, the bossa nova singer/guitarist has steadfastly rejected the limelight for fifty years. Gilberto's music however is unimpeachable and as a musician he nothing short of a genius. This two disc compilation comprises João Gilberto's seminal and profoundly influential first three albums in full, and in doing so chronicles a key early phase in the evolution of bossa nova music. Appended to these tracks are two rare non-album bonus cuts, only previously released on an EP in 1959.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova legend maybe too much ? March 19, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I suppose that "too much of a good thing" is a left-handed compliment. So be it. Production quality of this CD is excellent, as is the number of songs. Indeed, it apparently contains the tracks of 3 complete albums from about 1960, all 5-star rated in Allmusic. Good value. I did enjoy it all. The music is relatively light jazz, with uniform sound throughout, that makes very pleasant background music. Therein lies the problem. There is not much diversity in the music. At some point during the play, I stopped hearing good light jazz and started hearing "elevator music". Buy this CD to get a bit of history and a lot of very good music ... but either mix the tracks with some Byrd and Jobim into a playlist, or else listen to the whole CD in installments and not at one sitting. You'll enjoy the music more that way.
