Editorial Reviews

The Munich-based Rosamunde Quartet made a sensational début in 1992 and swiftly gained an international reputation as a chamber ensemble noted for its individual style and mastery of a broad repertoire. Unusually, the four musicans Andreas Reiner (first violin), Simon Fordham (second violin), Helmut Nicolai (viola) and Anja Lechner (cello) came together after they had individually established successful careers. Up until his death in 1996, maestro Sergiu Celibidache was their mentor, friend and critic in this venture, and he continues to be their inspiration. The quartet emulate his single-minded perfectionism; approach music-making, as he did, from a well-founded understanding; and always remember his impatience if he thought they were just playing notes and not music.

This lively and intimate portrait accompanies the ensemble as they rehearse, travel, perform, and also catches each of the musicians off duty. They are seen playing works by both classical and modern composers in sequences which have a contemporary visual impact, and their collaboration with the Argentinean bandoneon master, Dino Saluzzi, is also featured.

Knowing of Rosamunde Quartet/Anja Lechner from ECM and seeing the price of this item around ten, I decided to get it. It's an hour long journey round the musical universe of 4 distinguished players. Each one of them briefly comes alive and leads to journey to the next. Yes, in the beginning, they mention, just mention, Celibidache and his influence, but then off they go. The portraits of the individual players are cursory, just like the process by which this quartet comes musically together. So, short on every dimension, or let's say, note.

Especially for those interested in Dino Saluzzi, there is, close to the end, a transition into how this quartet got to work with Dino. This makes for an introduction into the musical/cultural-bridge between two different worlds. As well, those who like what Anja and Dine have come up with would find this an interesting preamble into the relationship.

All in all, better rented; of marginal import relative to Rosamunde Quartet, even less so to Celibidache.

Why am I stressing the Celibidache aspect? Because this release sets some expectations with the claim of "Celibidache Heritage;" that must have been a 1/2-clever promotional move to get additional sales/attention.
