THE PURSUIT OF PET HAPPINESS

If your dog wags his tail in your house and no one is there to see it, is he still happy?

“I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF DAKOTA IS HAPPY.” I HEAR THIS FROM owners nearly every day.

Are Simba, Diesel, Oscar, Darby, Ladybug, Numbers, Pippin, Isabelle, or Ariadne happy? How can we know?

When we brought animals out of their natural habitats and into our homes, we formed a partnership with them. The original impetus may have been for protection, but I believe that even in the very first human interactions with a cave-pet, there was an element of joy. We hope their domestication has brought them more advantages than disadvantages. Because we are grateful for what our pets offer us, we want to reliably provide what they need. We are advocates for these silent family members.

Nonetheless, they communicate with their language of wagging tails, purring, and head-butting. We’d like to believe that our pets are at least as cheerful as they might be in the wild. In general we do not concern ourselves with the comfort level of wildlife. However, when I worked in wildlife rehabilitation, I was deeply concerned about this, particularly because the animals were under human care. I was certain that once returned to the wild, they would make their own way. While quantifying the contentedness of a wild animal is difficult, I assess the happiness of pets every day.

Owners wonder if any animal can be satisfied living in an apartment, a small ranch house, a mansion, a farmhouse, or a high-rise. They might wonder if the pet that travels the world with my client Oprah Winfrey is happier than the pet living in a city apartment with my client Sondra, who works as a night nurse. Both pets seem content to me.

Pets keep us grounded in the moment. Despite our busy schedules, the pace of a pet remains the same, and we must become part of that pace, if only for a brief part of our day. A fifteen-minute walk with your dog or a quiet moment with your cat is invaluable for both you and your animal.

Pet owners understandably worry about myriad things: whether they provide too few or too many activities for their pets, whether they are feeding them the best food, if current vaccine schedules are safe, and if alternative treatments really work. Finding the right resources and correct answers is fraught with false claims and vested interests.

In response to all of this, I urge pet owners to not overanalyze. A pet should be a joy, not a job.

It is simple. Your pet lives in a safe, secure existence with a loving person. At the same time, understanding the primal imperatives will satisfy the inner wildcat and make the outer housecat purr; it will nourish the inner wolf and allow the outer puppy to grow.

I have noticed clients in my practice becoming more confident about their pet care decisions. They know that the Royal Treatment is not a plan that lavishes pets with unneeded pampering, but a sensible way to treat them. Giving your pet the Royal Treatment can ensure that he or she is not only happy but also wildly healthy. Once I’ve shown you how to do that, the next steps are a walk in the park. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I have owned a pet business for over ten years and read every book I can get my hands on regarding pet nutrition, health, training, fiction, etc. This is the best one bar none and should be required reading for all veterinarians. Thank you to Dr. Barbara Royal for sharing this information with us and making it accessible reading. Her passion and love is genuine, the personal stories are moving, and the book is a tremendous resource. If you have a pet, please read this book, it will be the best money spent.

I am not what you would call a "reader"..... I am easily distracted and fall asleep unless the subject is really interesting..... I had a few concerns about my dog and since my daughter had started taking her animals to Dr Royal and found her to be so knowledgeable and caring and helped her with so many things....I decided to buy the book...... I live out of state, I had so many unanswered questions that the book clarified for us .... best thing I could have done to help our 10 year old shih tzu.... she was eating canned food in the morning and kibble at night... she was overweight and just didn't act like she felt that great... she has glaucoma and was not on a good path for good health... there is a wealth of knowledge in Dr Royal's book... I am constantly referring back to it..... they make great gifts.

As a pet supply store owner, I probably have a copy of every pet nutrition book on the market. I ordered this one for my research library without realizing just how amazing this would be. This book is approachable, easy to read and really teaches the pet owner (and any vet smart enough to read this) about nutrition and pet health. The simplified approach is perfect for someone who doesn't have a ton of time to read and dissect more complicated texts. I bought 9 copies - one for everyone on my staff - and made it required reading. I've also begged my customers to order copies for themselves. If your vet advises you to feed a dry, processed kibble every day for the rest of your pets' life, you owe it to your pet to read this book.

Want a healthier dog/cat? Get this book.
Have a not so healthy dog/cat? Get this book.
Want to cut your vet bills? Get this book.

I am lucky enough to have Dr. Royal as my new found vet for my new rescue dog. After 3mo of diarrhea, sleepless nights(for both of us), worry, hundreds of $$ on meds(which were not working) & vet vists for a dog who is vet phobic, chicken breasts & rice, a dog who was on the path of malnutrition(again) with no hope or a plan in sight(other than more meds), a dog growing more tired, flat, cranky, & thin.
Off to Dr Royal.....3 days later, normal stools! Now, one month later(and only one appt.) I have an energy filled dog who has regained health-and NO meds, just a great healthy diet- which in turn provides the body to heal. And I get to sleep again!

To avoid repeating what has already been said in these reviews......I completely agree with the above reviewers.

You & your dog/cat have nothing to lose, only to gain, So.....read the book!

I think its fantastic that Dr. Royal has finally found the time to share her wisdom in this book so that many more people have the opportunity to employ her methods to increase the quality and prolong the lives of their pets. I experienced first hand what an incredible positive impact her advice and treatments had on the last years of the life of our chocolate lab Harp, who was able to run and play like a puppy til the day before he died at 13, despite a diagnosis of severe arthritis in all four legs and his back. We have continued to follow her approach with our two new young dogs in hopes they will never develop the ailments Harp had. The book is wonderfully written, a pleasure to read, filled with stories that will make you cry and smile, as well as very sensible recommendations which are easy to put into practice. It is a true reflection of her love for animals and her passion for their well-being. I am so grateful that we found her and The Royal Treatment.

The Royal Treatment is a well organized and straight forward approach to balancing Eastern and Western veterinary medicine. The anecdotes and illustrations are well chosen and written in a clear and concise manner. I especially like the tables of herbal remedies and homeopathic first aid for pets. Dr. Royal includes an excellent description of acupuncture and its uses for various problems. There is also a thorough guide to getting your pet on a more natural diet. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with the inadequacies of western medicine and confusion wrought by the pet food industry.

I discovered integrative medicine for pets (and humans!) a couple of years ago. It has been fascinating to learn about the effects of food choices on my dog, and so wonderful to see the positive results a raw food diet has had on him. More vets need to understand nutrition and alternative methods of treatment, and open their minds to the various options. It breaks my heart when I hear about over-vaccination and vets promoting kibble diets, and read about the awful illnesses our pets are developing as a result of this ignorance. Dr Royal's love for animals and her job shines through in this book. It's personal and educational at the same time, and will serve as a great reference for me going forward. I loved the examples of the wide range of animals she has treated, and cried when I read the section on her dog Tundra's passing. I highly recommend this book! Dr Royal is my dog's vet, and he and I are so fortunate to have found her.
