Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–7—This humorous adventure, a sequel to The Runaway Princess (Farrar, 2006), captures readers' attention from the start and doesn't let go. Meg is an unconventional princess who has a mind of her own. When her pet dragon, Laddy, flies away, she is determined to go on a quest in search of him. Her parents reluctantly agree on the condition that she takes along a coterie of friends, including a wizard, guards, and a magic scarf to protect her. The ensuing story follows a route filled with surprises and intricate twists that keep readers wondering when, and if, Meg will reach her goal. She encounters unusual characters as she traverses an enchanted forest, but her unwavering courage keeps her steadfastly focused. Coombs cleverly incorporates references to fairy tales. The group rescues Spinach, a girl with unusually long hair imprisoned in a tower, who joins the adventure. They are forced to become playthings for a giant's daughter. Malison, the witch who ensnares Meg and her people, is the personification of evil and deviousness. Meg is a likable and multidimensional figure, as are her companions. The evil characters are richly drawn as well. Patricia Wrede's fans will love this offering, as will those who enjoyed Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted (HarperCollins, 1997).—Renee Steinberg, formerly at Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ END

“This humorous adventure, a sequel to The Runaway Princess (Farrar, 2006), captures readers’ attention from the start and doesn’t let go.” —School Library Journal

“Coombs mines the tropes of folklore for her situations and characters, and fans . . .will appreciate the strong feminist ending.” —Booklist

“Enchanted forests, rampant transmogrification, evil sorceresses and giants are all fine fodder for Coombs’s invent twists on traditional fairy tales.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Coombs again takes a familiar setup . . . and makes it fresh with droll humor, brisk plotting, and multidimensional characters. . . . A warm, witty story that will leave readers clamoring for the next installment.” —The Horn Book

More About the Author

Kate Coombs writes picture books, poetry, and middle grade fantasy novels. Her collection of ocean poems, Water Sings Blue, won the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award for 2012. Her first two picture books are The Secret-Keeper, an original folktale, and Hans My Hedgehog, a retelling of a Grimms' fairy tale. She has also written two comic fantasy books for 3rd through 7th graders, The Runaway Princess and its sequel, The Runaway Dragon. Kate has worked as a K-12 and college teacher and is currently Curriculum Director for a publisher of state history books. After spending most of her life in Los Angeles, Kate now lives in Utah, though she is embarrassed to admit she does not ski. Look for her next two picture books in Summer 2014: an Austen-inspired parody of Goodnight Moon called Goodnight Mr. Darcy and a rollicking face-off between the Tooth Fairy and a boy named Nathan in The Tooth Fairy Wars. Witty and charming sequel to Runaway Princess. Kate Coombs remains one of my all time favorite authors. Her writing is clever and fun and her books are a joy to read. Runaway Dragon takes Meg on another adventure - a quest to find her dragon Laddy, who has run (or flown) away. So much fun to spend more time with Meg, her friends Dilly, Cam and Nort, and my personal favorite, young wizard Lex. Oh! And Bain, a dashing young bandit. Two thumbs way, way up!

Kate Coombs has done it again. What a great read The Runaway Dragon is! Usually when there's a quest in a fairy tale, it's the prince looking for the princess and he's thwarted by the dragon. Coombs turns everything upside down with humour and great storytelling. Princess Meg is the one with the quest, and she is rescuing her dragon!

Meg goes off on a quest to find her dragon Laddy, who has run away from home. However, her parents insist that she take a lady-in-waiting, a wizard, and twelve guardsmen along for protection. On her adventures she encounters a giant, an evil enchantress, and dozens of enslaved bandits.
This is a fun and charming upside-down fairy tale similar to M.M. Kaye's The Ordinary Princess and Patricia C. Wrede's The Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

I bought this book for my youngest daughter, and my teenage daughter finished it even before we could. I enjoyed reading it as much as my daughter enjoyed hearing it. Kate is a great writer, weaving excitement, humor and mystery into a compelling story that intrigues all ages. I hope she will continue the saga with another adventure!
