I was given a review copy of The Sacred Journey. Pastor Surber gives personal reflections on the Beattidues. If you are looking for Biblical exposition you will not like the book. However, if you are looking for reflective application of the beattitudes then this book may be for you.

I gave the book three stars because there are so many personal anecdotes that it sometimes obscures the real message of the book. I'm sure the intention of the stories was to engage personally with the reader. There were so many of these that I found them distracting.

I thought I understood the beatitudes until I read this in-depth. Rev. Surber enriches what treaures they are. This is a wonderful book for study groups. Kudos to Rev. Surber for illuminating these passages of Matthew.

This book will be enjoyed by Christians looking for warm reassurance of a heavenly reward. For those seeking a real study of the Beatitudes, as I was, you will need to look elsewhere.
The author occupies our attention with personal experience that have little to do with the Beatitudes themselves and seem to meander aimlessly. The text cries out for editing and one can only wonder if it was edited at all, given the journalistic flaws (at one point the author says for no apparent reason "I have a lot of cousins!"). Not for the serious student.
