At the recommendation of my baby daughter's pediatrician, we decided to try introducing her to a straw cup rather than a sippy cup at around 6-and-a-half months old. (Pediatric speech therapists believe that prolonged sippy-cup use can cause speech delays). I first tried the Playtex Lil Gripper Training Cup, the Zoli Bot, and even boxed water (with a straw, so I could squeeze the box and push the water up the straw into baby's mouth). But no luck; my little-one didn't know what to do with the straw in her mouth. At most, she would chew on it like it was a teether, but she wouldn't suck on the straw, no matter what I did. I was THISCLOSE to caving in and buying a regular sippy cup when I spotted the Safe Sippy 2 (SS2) in my local health food store. It seemed to be the best of both worlds ... I could use a "sippy cup" to teach my baby to drink from a straw! (And even if my little-one ended up preferring the sippy to the straw, the SS2's straw-shaped spout would still be better for her speech development than traditional sippy-cup spouts).

I started out using the SS2 without any valves. I tipped it slightly so the water would slowly flow into my baby girl's mouth and show her that there was water in there. When she caught on, I put the sippy-valve into the SS2 and continued to tip it towards her mouth to teach her how to suck/sip liquid through a valve. Once she began to associate the SS2 spout with sucking, I replaced the sippy-valve with the straw-valve & straw and tipped the cup down, and ... voila! By her 2nd time using the SS2, my baby was drinking from the straw like a pro, and hasn't looked back since. The next day, she figured out how to hold the SS2 by its handles, and now drinks from the straw on her own. Finally, success, thanks to the SS2!

I too have noticed the "stinking" problem many other reviewers have mentioned. I thought the culprit was the silicone sleeve, which is easy to take off but tricky to put back on. But today I noticed a water swishing sound when I shook a seemingly dry cap. Upon investigation I found out that the green plastic top on the cap can be pushed off the orange base (the one with the spout on). when I took the green top off the orange base I was completely grossed out by the stuff that trapped in between: milk residue, black mold and God knows what ancient food debris! No wonder the cup always smelled like milk even after I painstakingly washed every single part. I feel bad that I've been given this dirty cup to my daughter all these time - things can get in they can get out too. And where do they end up going? Around the spout of course! It's inconceivable why the maker would design a cap system (not the valve or the o-ring, just the cap) featuring two layers of plastic that is difficult to take apart/snap back on but loose enough to trap liquid. I liked this cup because of the stainless steel interior and my daughter seems to like it too. But honestly there were already too many parts to clean before I made the discovery today. If you own a Safe Sippy and have never popped open the cap, you probably should check it out too.

This is the newer generation of this Safe Sippy and it seems ok to me! A lot of reviews for the earlier version of this cup said they leaked, but I haven't had that issue (yet). That being said, I don't know how kid-friendly this cup is. My daughter is only 8 months and can understand the concept of a cup, but this one eludes her. I'm holding out hope that she will figure out the straw-like opening this sippy sports, which is supposed to be the best kind for developing jaws and such. The cup comes with three adapters- one for a straw for older kids, one for a regular valve for younger kids (leaks a bit, but just what is left in the straw portion of the mouthpiece- not a continuous stream of fluid), and a stopper for travel. Supposedly everything is BPA-free. There is also a removable cover and handles, and the silicone sleeve comes off if you want to wash either the bottle or cover. All in all, good quality, but maybe for slightly older kids who know what straws are about.

I breast fed both of my children. I don't know why, but neither took the bottle at all or with a lot of work, so it was tough when I was trying to find something for them to use. I tried so many sippy cups, and bottles) and both of them LOVED the Safe Sippy! It was really the only one that they have consistently used and loved from the start. Having the option to use either to tilt like a bottle or use as a straw is so great too! My daughter, having not used a bottle didn't understand the tilting action at first, so the straw made it really easy. My older son, now 4, will still uses his in the car and places where we don't want to spill. The product is SO durable. We have had the same ones for 4 years! You can get replacement parts if needed, but they have really lasted forever it seems, and I dish wash them almost every night. They seem a bit pricey at first compared to some cups, but they are so worth the investment. Plus you have the added bonus of less plastic. The whole bottle minus the top is all stainless steel so I feel reassured that it is a safer product for them. I really can't recommend them enough; whether or not you have had trouble with bottles or sippy's I really think this product is great and worth every penny.

The customer service is amazing! I have used the same two sippys for years (because they are soo sturdy and wash/wear so well) with my son. I bought one for my daughter that happened to leak, which I knew from past experience, was not typical. So, I called and they sent me out a brand new cup no problem (that works perfectly), along with a few added items just for the trouble. I thought that was soo nice and made me love their product that much more. Customer Service is so important for me and I was really impressed.
