This is an extremely thorough work on how salt manufacturing contributed to the economic boom that occurred in 19th century Cape Cod. The author covers the origins of salt manufacture on the Cape, then provides specific information about the history of the saltworks of each town. He also writes about some other contemporary Cape industries and activities; giving some cultural context to the meteoric rise and rapid decline of this industry. Even the appendices are full of interesting information.

The book is well written and full of photos, maps, and illustrations that help the reader understand the impact this industry had on the culture and landscape of Cape Cod.

I became interested in the saltworks while researching the Cape's grist mills and, with the help of this book, I ended up being equally engrossed in this aspect of Cape Cod history.
