Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were lucky to have Johnny Mandel write the music for this, their "Honeymoon" film. Mr. Mandel's love of the Big Sur coast is beautifuly realized here in his score for The Sandpiper. The colors of the music are so painterly in their layering and execution that they stay with the listener long after the CD has ended. Cool and rich, this jazz inspired music is as intoxicating as a slow drive down Highway One to the Nepenthe. Not to be overlooked are Jack Sheldon's romantic trumpet solos. His contribution is the soulful heart of this soundtrack. Many thanks to Verve for reissuing this wonderful 60's masterpiece. Finally, one cannot help but wonder if "The Shadow Of Your Smile" holds a special place in Elizabeth Taylor's heart. Memories of a beautiful place along the windswept California Coast and the begining of her married life with Richard Burton.

THIS IS POSSIBLY ONE OF THE MOST ROMANTIC SCORES EVER WRITTEN FOR A MOVIE. THE MUSIC IS HAUNTING, SMOKEY AND SEDUCTIVE. IF YOU WANT MUSIC THAT WILL CREATE JUST THE RIGHT MOOD, THIS IS IT !

After the marvelous work arranger/conductor/composer Johnny Mandel did for Sinatra on Frank's first album for Reprise in 1961, titled "Ring-A-Ding Ding!," I knew I'd be in for a treat with the purchase of "The Sandpiper" soundtrack on the Mercury/Verve/Polygram label. Yes, I had heard this beautiful score when the Taylor/Burton/Saint movie was released back in 1965, but failed to buy this masterpiece at the time. Lo and behold, I crossed paths with it once again, just recently on AMAZON.COM. I was fortunate to find it through a private seller, as it has been out-of-print for a long, long time. Believe me, it is one of the most soothing and haunting scores I have ever heard. A special salute to Jack Sheldon, whose magnificent trumpet solos can be heard throughout the soundtrack. This is the kind of music where you kick back, throw a few logs in the fireplace, sip some Jack Daniel's, and revisit the breathtaking northern California coast, in and around the Big Sur area. If you've never heard this soundtrack, do yourself a favor and listen to it. You might even find a few copies still available here at AMAZON.COM. Your time and effort will be rewarded with some of the most mesmerizing, beautiful music you'll ever hear.

My husband loves this score. Johnny Mandel scores like no one else. Out of date CD's are tough to find. Good seller and perfect transaction.
