Of all the Dark Horse reprint collections of Marvel's landmark "Savage Sword Of Conan" magazine, Vol. 6 is the one that shows just how much a challenge it is adapting Conan to comics form - even when someone else has spent years showing you how.

The year is 1981, and the magazine has seen better days. Roy Thomas, who founded "Savage Sword" in 1974 and wrote all the stories for the first seven years, has just left his post as editor. What he left behind was something akin to an "open-mike night," with a new editor, two new writers, several new inkers, and a lot of odd ideas about what to do with the grim Cimmerian.

How odd? In one story, writer Michael Fleisher has Conan squaring off against a tribe of man-killing Amazons who ride tigers into battle. In another, writer Bruce Jones has him adopting a little girl who grows into a Sports Illustrated cover model in about a week. He tells her: "Dream of a crude, ham-fisted barbarian who was privileged for a time, to know you as daughter...and lover." Is this guy Conan, or Hugh Hefner?

The upside of this collection for me is the chance to see the Conan formula shaken up a bit. Each of the 11 issues reprinted here was a stand-alone story, meaning if you don't like the direction of one you can move on to the next easily enough. Some of them are fun, if in a lunk-headed way that doesn't do justice to the Conan character as created by Robert E. Howard and adapted for the graphic medium by Thomas.

Thomas himself provides four of the stories here, either as a freelancer or a desk cleaner. Except for a sequel adventure to the Howard story "Pool Of The Black Ones" entitled "Plunder Of Death Island," even Roy seems to miss the old magic.

The Savage Sword of Conan series continues its impressive run in volume 6 with issues #61-#71. Even with the addition of new writers aside from the brilliant Roy Thomas, the adventures of the Cimmerian still envolve plenty of encounters with wizards, demons, and beautiful women. The artwork is really well done, especially the demon creatures in many of the stories. If you have been collecting the entire series up to this point, this volume continues previous tales like "The Pool of the Black One/Torrent of Doom" from volume two and "The Citadel at the Center of Time" from volume one. Another good Conan read indeed.

I like how one of the review questions is describing the plot. It's SSoC for goodness sake. We're buying it for one reason when it comes to plot: it's Conan hacking people and monsters down. We want that predictablity. The last thing we want is an hour long dialogue with the likes of the Mad Thinker and him.

It's classic SSoC stuff. I'm glad they're releasing it like this as it would be expensive and nightmarish to track down the back magazines. It's still in it's original B+W, so unlike most of the TPBs which were color and rerleased in B+W because of economics.

if you have the first five you must have six. reprints from the original savage sword. the only problem is you just get the main conan story from the mag, not any of the other stories, but that's ok these are well worth having. and will save you a whole lot of money and time hunting for the orig. unless the thrill of the hunt is the best part. get these and enjoy the early days of conan

Solid Conan stories and exceptional art from Buscema, Chan and the rest. Probably the last of the classic run of this series. All of the Dark Horse collections offer great value to fans of this genre.

The Conan stories are fantastic. Worth it! The only caveat is regarding the size, as they could be larger for easier reading and viewing the drawings.
