I am an SAT tutor and believe that this is one of the most valuable books of its type a student preparing for the test can read. Unfortunately, in my experience, students also find this one of the least enjoyable books. Why is it valuable?

There are 2 major areas that a student must master to improve scores on the SAT Critical Reading section: (1) Vocabulary. (2) Understanding of complex sentence structures. This book provides a student with both. (1) SAT words are bolded, their definitions conveniently located on the facing page. (2) Sentence structure is complex and the book is written in "older" English which is partly a result of the era it was written in. The college board knows this and even suggests that students read books written before 1900. The complex sentences and old language may be reasons students do not put The Scarlet Letter on their Top 10 Favorite Books List, but it does not take away from the book's value-- if you can get your child to read it.

I saw this book at bookstore. The left pages inside the book contain all SAT vocabularies for contents shown on the right pages. Each vocabulary has synonyms. It's good for students to build SAT words. However, after I bought the Kindle version, I was very disappointedly to found that the SAT word definition and synonyms were all gone! You have to use eBook's dictionary to check each bold word yurself. Amazon should indicate this to avoid misleading.

I selected this book as part of a independent reading assignment for school. I figured I had hear enough about the book & I could at least get the version for SAT prep and kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I must say this book has turned out to be heart wrenching and personally I would recommend this book to everyone! Well every adult / MUCH MUCH older teen, It's not what you are lead to believe the book's about by the media. Great piece of ligature!

The novel introduces Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, and Pearl in a Puritan town of Massachusetts. Hester Prynne proves to be a feisty woman at times who keeps her words and pride despite being shunned by the community. Her daughter, Little Pearl, as she calls her, is an elf-like child who is straightforward and honest. Roger Chillingworth is man who can be careless but does not back down once he sets to do something, such as revenge. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale is a fragile man not only mentally but physically as well, who bears a dark secret. He also preaches at sermons and is known to be an intelligent man by the community.
The story embarks off with Hester Prynne walking out of prison with a baby and an intricately sewn scarlet letter, "A", on her bosom. The whole town starts to gossip, for Hester committed an unforgivable act. She had fallen in love and given birth to a child with another man, not her husband. Furthermore, she does not confess and reveal who the man is despite being asked in front of the public so many times. Later on, a man by the name of Roger Chillingworth, visits her prison cell, and it is revealed Roger is Hester's husband, whom left her for nine years. Chillingworth promises Hester he will find that man who had done this to her and get revenge. Suddenly, Chillingworth is appointed Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale physician.
This novel is very detailed in many aspects, especially when talking about the scenery, which contained refreshing imagery. On the other hand, the old-fashioned writing style was frustrating at times and caused confusion for me; furthermore, it was difficult to understand as well with the words "hast", "thy", or "thou".

We had heard about these Kaplan SAT score-raising classics & this is the first one we bought. I was shocked at how many vocab words there are throughout the entire book! The book size is initially intimidating since it is twice as thick as normal. They only print the text of the book on the odd numbered pages. Every vocab word you have is printed on the opposing page with the pronunciation as well as definition. It is great to see the words being used in context to help learn & retain the meanings. I expected maybe 1-3 vocab words a page, but many pages are close to full with all of the vocab words. It is a great vocab learning, score-raising tool while you are simply reading a novel. It also helps you to understand the novel by giving the definitions right there while reading it. These are a great concept!

This copy of The Scarlet Letter is the complete version of the original novel. My daughter's AP teacher recommended that she use the Kaplan version because it references hundreds of SAT words that are used throughout the book. This book provides a pronunciation guide and definitions for the highlighted SAT words on the facing page. There is also an easy reference index at the back of the book. I recommend the Kaplan SAT experience for all college bound students.
