More About the Author

DEE DeTARSIO is a TV writer living in southern California. After growing up in Ennui, Ohio, and graduating from The Ohio State University she vowed never to be cold again (in a tantrum more worthy of Suellen than Scarlett) and ended up in Tucson, Arizona, producing the news for the CBS affiliate, oddly enough called KOLD-TV. She moved to San Diego where she worked in the SeaWorld entertainment department as a producer/writer. (Penguins are mean!) She then became a producer/writer for the NBC affiliate.

From the blurb, The Scent of Jade sounded like a sexy romantic adventure. Unfortunately it fell flat for me. While the premise was intriguing, as the story went along, all the situations that Julie found herself in... well, each one seemed more ridiculous than the last. I'm pretty sure that the story was supposed to be funny, but more often than not I was shaking my head and wondering how much worse this could get. And then I found the climax, well, anticlimactic.

But I think what really made this book a bust for me was that I honestly didn't care for any of the characters. Well, I take that back; the monkey was funny. But the rest of the cast... I couldn't seem to connect with any of them. In particular, I didn't enjoy being in Julie's head throughout the story. She whined a lot, was self-centered and I didn't see any "real" growth in her character. But what it all boils down to is that I didn't like her and for me to enjoy a book, I need like and care about the main characters.

It appears that the reviewers on Amazon disagree with me, but I just didn't really enjoy this read.

My idea of a romantic comedy is apparently not what others thought. SPOILER ALERT: I could never under no circumstances forgive my husband for having sex with someone else. I just could not get past this towards the end of the book to enjoy the story. There were some funny scenes in the book but I wish I had just read something else.

I downloaded this book onto my i-phone amazon kindle and found myself mesmorised and hooked to the book. I was walking into lamp-posts, jay walking etc. Every given moment in any given location I was tuned in and reading it. I loved it, loved it, loved it and so will you. READ IT NOW. Congrats to such a talented, funny, "I got the reader hooked in for sure" writer. Can't wait for your next one.

The novel started off okay. The lead was interesting, although at times she was quite annoying and self entitled. What I could never wrap my mind around was how totally ludicrous the premise was of an ancient stone of jade being the key to global warming. Not even with the authors convoluted attempts to make it sound scientific. I forced myself to finish the novel but it just got worse and worse. I really feel like I wasted my time on this one.

One of the funniest books I've read in a very long time. The main character is the perfect anti-heroine which makes you warm to her even more. Although the situation she is in is crazy and fantastical (yes, other reviewers are correct in saying the story isn't realistic but then most romances are far from realistic - don't we read them for the fantasy element?), you can believe she is a real person, with all her insecurities and desire for home comforts, yet stoic ability to just keep going and survive her ordeal. This definitely isn't your average romance novel but the exploration of "love" is far more believeable. There are so many scenarios in this book that had me belly laughing out loud, which is rare. I hope others enjoyed it as much as I did, but don't read this if you are looking for a boy-meets-girl or steamy romance. This is a woman-disgusted-by-husband-has-adventure-and-finds-her-way-back-to-husband story, and the only steam is from the humidity of the jungle or coming out of her ears in anger.

OMG - if you are a female and thinking about buying this book...stop right now. JUST DO IT!! No I do not know the author and am am not getting paid to tell you this. Honestly!! I just finished this book and I LOVED IT. It is a light, adventurous, very funny, intriguing read. I am so sad I finished it. I am giving it 5 stars for the great "whole body laughs," the creativity, the humor, the adventure, and the "carry me away" factor. Don't we all deserve to FEEL GOOD, LAUGH and safely be out there on the edge through a wonderfully imaginative author's words??? You Bet!

A typical chick lit plot device is to thrust the protagonist into an unexpected situation where she is out of her comfort zone. She'll then make a series of questionable decisions, which make her situation increasingly worse. Although flustered, she never gives up, and eventually stumbles on a way out of the situation and finds a way of meeting whatever goal initially prompted her down this road. It's a pattern that works well.

In many ways, the plot of "The Scent of Jade" fits this formula. However, it is atypical in the kind of challenges the protagonist Julie encounters. These challenges are often much more physical, giving the book an action-adventure flavor, and the jade artifact adds a hint of mystery to the story.

I'll consider a book a solid or competent effort if the story is told well and doesn't suffer from obvious technical flaws. What it takes to elevate it above that level varies. It might be a story that pushes the right buttons. Sometimes it is a unique twist on a typical formula. This book gets partially there on that basis. What pushed it over the top were clever descriptions that made me say, this is why she is the author and I'm just the reviewer. For example, when DeTarsio described a rainstorm "as if a Paul-Bunyan-sized cabana boy was throwing swimming-pool-sized buckets of water at the house." Another was when the protagonist Julie's narration said, "my heart stopped mid-pump while my flight instinct kicked in and kicked my fight instinct's ass." Clever, smart, and funny all in one line. For that matter, clever, smart, and funny describes all of "The Scent of Jade."
