Book Description

The Scent of Jade
Award-winning author Dee DeTarsio combines life's darker side with humor and tenderness in a wonderfully charming look at love and finding our place in the universe.

"Romancing The Stone" meets "Survivor" for Julie Fraser, who surprised her husband on a business trip in Costa Rica. Reeling from the discovery that her husband wasn't who she thought he was, she accidentally steals an ancient artifact and is chased through the wilds of the rainforest, not knowing where to turn, literally, or whom to trust. She knew she should have stayed home.

Can a monkey, a blond Juan, a foreign scientist, a mysterious love potion and the jade stone itself (that may hold secrets to global warming), help Julie on her mission to find and forgive her husband?

The stolen idol catapults her on a quest, as she discovers truths along the way about herself and her place in the universe. The Scent of Jade is creative and unique with surprising twists--in turn suspenseful and heartbreaking, combining humor and romance to reach the payoff ending.

The Scent of Jade was a finalist in the Seventeenth Annual San Diego Book and Writing Awards. Other books by Dee DeTarsio include The Kitchen Shrink, Ros, 'Til Somebody Loves You, Haole Wood (Winner San Diego Book Awards, and Finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards), and All My Restless Life to Live.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fell short for me August 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition

From the blurb, The Scent of Jade sounded like a sexy romantic adventure. Unfortunately it fell flat for me. While the premise was intriguing, as the story went along, all the situations that Julie found herself in... well, each one seemed more ridiculous than the last. I'm pretty sure that the story was supposed to be funny, but more often than not I was shaking my head and wondering how much worse this could get. And then I found the climax, well, anticlimactic.

But I think what really made this book a bust for me was that I honestly didn't care for any of the characters. Well, I take that back; the monkey was funny. But the rest of the cast... I couldn't seem to connect with any of them. In particular, I didn't enjoy being in Julie's head throughout the story. She whined a lot, was self-centered and I didn't see any "real" growth in her character. But what it all boils down to is that I didn't like her and for me to enjoy a book, I need like and care about the main characters.

It appears that the reviewers on Amazon disagree with me, but I just didn't really enjoy this read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Good December 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
My idea of a romantic comedy is apparently not what others thought. SPOILER ALERT: I could never under no circumstances forgive my husband for having sex with someone else. I just could not get past this towards the end of the book to enjoy the story. There were some funny scenes in the book but I wish I had just read something else.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely unrealistic January 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The novel started off okay. The lead was interesting, although at times she was quite annoying and self entitled. What I could never wrap my mind around was how totally ludicrous the premise was of an ancient stone of jade being the key to global warming. Not even with the authors convoluted attempts to make it sound scientific. I forced myself to finish the novel but it just got worse and worse. I really feel like I wasted my time on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! January 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
OMG - if you are a female and thinking about buying this book...stop right now. JUST DO IT!! No I do not know the author and am am not getting paid to tell you this. Honestly!! I just finished this book and I LOVED IT. It is a light, adventurous, very funny, intriguing read. I am so sad I finished it. I am giving it 5 stars for the great "whole body laughs," the creativity, the humor, the adventure, and the "carry me away" factor. Don't we all deserve to FEEL GOOD, LAUGH and safely be out there on the edge through a wonderfully imaginative author's words??? You Bet!

You become angry at your spouse, you get lost in the forest isn't that enough to go wrong. Oh no! The Scent of Jade keeps you guessing until the very end. A love story, a mystery all rolled into one. It is a quick read and one that you don't want to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scent of Jade was perfect read. September 3, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not an enthusiastic reader, something really has to hold my interest for me to actually ready it. The story of Julie's unexpected adventure seemed so believable, not all fantasy. A captivating story with current lingo and realistic feelings, not some romance novel type. I felt myself with her the whole story. Can't wait to read her next adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny June 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of the funniest books I've read in a very long time. The main character is the perfect anti-heroine which makes you warm to her even more. Although the situation she is in is crazy and fantastical (yes, other reviewers are correct in saying the story isn't realistic but then most romances are far from realistic - don't we read them for the fantasy element?), you can believe she is a real person, with all her insecurities and desire for home comforts, yet stoic ability to just keep going and survive her ordeal. This definitely isn't your average romance novel but the exploration of "love" is far more believeable. There are so many scenarios in this book that had me belly laughing out loud, which is rare. I hope others enjoyed it as much as I did, but don't read this if you are looking for a boy-meets-girl or steamy romance. This is a woman-disgusted-by-husband-has-adventure-and-finds-her-way-back-to-husband story, and the only steam is from the humidity of the jungle or coming out of her ears in anger.

4.0 out of 5 stars cute
Enjoyable light reading with adventure somewhat remniscent of Tales of the Gold Monkey or Romancing the Stone plus a dose of tree hugging.

More About the Author

DEE DeTARSIO is a TV writer living in southern California. After growing up in Ennui, Ohio, and graduating from The Ohio State University she vowed never to be cold again (in a tantrum more worthy of Suellen than Scarlett) and ended up in Tucson, Arizona, producing the news for the CBS affiliate, oddly enough called KOLD-TV. She moved to San Diego where she worked in the SeaWorld entertainment department as a producer/writer. (Penguins are mean!) She then became a producer/writer for the NBC affiliate.

HAOLE WOOD (Winner, 2013 San Diego Book Awards, Romance, and 2013 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist, Chick Lit)

Though her mother never beat her (that hard) and her father is not a celebrity, she suspects one of her four sisters is a vampire.
