More About the Author

Having been brought up on Enid Blyton, my love of children's magic and fantasy was developed at an early age, with my favourite childhood books being The Enchanted Wood series. As I got older, I continued to read my favourite children's books (which I still do) but also became a big fan of horror, particularly works by Stephen King. I believe that both of these legendary authors have helped to influence my writing and shape my career, enabling me to write in two distinct and different genres catering for both imaginative children and older readers who enjoy stories with a twist.

For the past eight years I have been working as a successful freelance copywriter, creating content for a global client base and in a variety of different genres. However, writing fiction for children is something that I love to do - and using words to give children the opportunity to explore new lands and different worlds using their imagination, as I did as a child, is something that I take pride in doing. I also love to create stories for older readers under my pen name of Emily Ho. These are stories that are created to provide thrills and chills, with each tale having a surprise twist at the end. Some are horror and supernatural, others are gritty urban dramas - but all have a dark undertone to them.

In my twenties, I won a short story competition judged by Curtis Brown Literary Agency, which helped me to become even more determined to pursue a career in writing - The Journey Home is now one of the short stories available on Amazon under my pen name of Emily Ho.

In my early thirties, I spent eight weeks on a reality TV show on prime time TV, but the less said about that the better!Since then, I have dedicated my time to creating content for clients, which is how I make my living, and creating books/stories that capture the imagination of kids and older readers, which is my passion!

I'm always interested in an epic fantasy adventure. The Sceptre of Zanafiar is just that and YA thrown in to boot. When the elemental kings reclaim the gems from the scepter, the only rightful heir is Darius, a boy raised among humans as an orphan named William. As the adventure unfolds, he must learn to use the power of the gems to survive each obstacle.

I liked that Darius/William is a likable protagonist. He's kind and noble just like a hero should be. I didn't like that the author did several info dumps where all the facts are laid out in a big flashback or thought instead of dispersed through the story. I found myself skimming big paragraphs then having to go back and read them again because I missed something.

In the end, I recommend this to middle grade and up readers who enjoy fantasy.

I am 35 years old and The Sceptre of Zanafiar is the first fantasy/magic book I have ever read. So happy I did too! It is a delightful and exciting adventure with an unexpected twist. The author, Reno Charlton, uses great descriptive imagery, as it is just enough to re-create the world of Zanafiar and all its inhabitants in your head. Endearing characters and some silliness keep the pages turning. A recommended read for pre-teens, teens, and adults.

It is very good and I like the idea of a scepter that has t elemental jewels in it (if you are planning to read the book don't you find that out right in the beginning). But the plot line could use a bit more action.

The novel paid little attention to detail and lacks the usual sub plots and surprise ending. It is straight forward and to the point - almost like playing a video game were you already have and follow the walk through using shortcuts without exploring more of the game. While the ending leaves the possiblity open for a 2nd book the plot of this first book could have easily been expanded to 2 or 3 books decribing the inhabitants and countyside in greater detail with a few more subplots.
