Book Description

Witty banter, suspense, romantic comedy, fantasy, and paranormal elements make for an entertaining romp set in the present day, but touching on history from medieval Chartres to the Civil War. It's a fairy tale where the Da Vinci Code meets Murder She Wrote

By 3-time Wall Street Journal best selling author Carolyn Jourdan whose previous novel of mystery and romantic suspense, Out on a Limb was ranked #1 in Mystery and #1 in Medical Fiction on Amazon. Her newest book, The School for Mysteries, is described as "Great fun! A witty romantic adventure and an hilarious successor to Mrs. Pollifax. Makes you realize if Jessica Fletcher had been a nurse, there would've been a lot fewer dead bodies littering Cabot Cove."

In The School for Mysteries Phoebe McFarland has just lost her job as a rural home health care nurse in White Oak, Tennessee, a sleepy rural community nestled in the mist-shrouded Smoky Mountains. But then she's unexpectedly offered a ritzy-sounding position as a private duty nurse to an enigmatic scholar.

Unfortunately before she can start her upscale new life, Phoebe is unwittingly caught up in a medical emergency with Nick, a total stranger. The mismatched couple is forced to cooperate as they flee professional killers who now have Phoebe in their crosshairs as well.

Will Phoebe and friends be able to prevent some scary guys from killing her and Nick over a mysterious book that's not even finished?

Interesting story line, fun main characters, wonderful little ditties on aging and Tennessee, especially the residents of the Smoky Mountains.

So why only two stars? The beating over your head of Christianity. Sermonizing, Bible quoting, trashing another writer because he wrote a book of FICTION this author didn't like, etc.

I won't read another by her. Comparing the main character to Mrs. Pollifax would only be accurate if Mrs. Pollifax were a soapbox preacher (which she certainly is not).

I finished it, don't know why. I'm glad it was a freebie, and will be deleting off my Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh so highly recommended April 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Phoebe is literally and figuratively out on a limb high in a tree in the Smokey Mountains when a naked man falls into the safety net. She's acrophobic; he's agoraphobic. A match made in heaven?? What ensues is a witty and exciting romp thru a hospital, stone mansion, castle, and even Chartres, France, with some "hillbilly magic" help as they cope with their phobias eluding pursuit. Phoebe is wonderfully human and feminine; a heroine in which to relate. Adeptly written, it's the best I've read in a long time, and I read a lot! Cannot recommend it highly enough!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very different (from her previous work) but good May 25, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While this mystery shares several characters with her previous mystery, this one takes a bounce through a supernatural door I wasn't prepared for. Wishing to avoid spoilers I'll simply say that if you are willing to "suspend disbelief" as one does in a movie, the journey is worthwhile.

I give the book five stars but ... I would not have wished more of the conspiracy theory. Elvis was not on the grassy knoll with Lee H. O. and no amount of prattle will make it so. I hope Ms. Jourdan you do not go down that drain further. By contrast, Christophe and his kind, however, are fun and the reason this book rises to the top.

A caveat: The book ends abruptly, as if there is a sequel coming. If not, then Ms. Jourdan should have wrapped up the novel more thoroughly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed May 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have enjoyed other Carolyn Jourdan books set in the Smokie Mountains. Since I enjoy mysteries, and based on positive reviews, I purchased this book. Maybe it was over my head but, for me, the story line was unrealistic and complicated. Adding to my disappointment were the typos and grammatical errors. I just don't get why this is the case with so many Kindle books! It's distracting and annoying.

What a fun romp! I love a spunky heroine, and the settings are beautiful--the Smokies, a place that looks a lot like Biltmore House, the Frick Gallery, and France. Phoebe and Nick are a LOT of fun. My family eyeballed me warily more than once as I laughed out loud while reading. And I LOVED the esoteric elements--a new direction for the author that I hope she will continue. This hilarious, fast-paced story is sure to Jourdan's next bestseller.

...and new heroine: Phoebe MacFarland!
Enjoyed this book immensely. Intelligent and sensitive female characters,
A romp through esoteric history with some high fashion and culture as well, and recognizable sights of great beauty and significance. Fun, smart, well written- who could ask for more?
Me! so let's have some more of Phoebe and soon!
