Editorial Reviews

How do Imagineers make elephants fly? Actually, it's simple...simple machines, that is! Here, the Imagineers give a new look at how levers and pulleys were utilized to create attractions such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Soarin' Over California. Students will see how levers and pulleys make work easier by either multiplying or redirecting the effort we put into them. They will identify the two forces involved in using a machine and learn to calculate mechanical advantage, given effort and resistance. Each Imagineering DVD includes a bonus try-it-yourself experiement, an interactive activity to reinforce key learnings, Public Performance Rights and a printable educator's guide.

Walt Disney believed, "If you can dream it, you can do it," and that belief is at the core of Disney Imagineering; the place where imagination meets engineering. Imagineers use science to create and build unique attractions that delight Disney guests around the globe. This award-winning series uses roller coasters, stunt shows, animatronics, and other irresistible examples to break down scientific principles in a way that is accessible for all learners. Just imagine what you could do if the whole world was your toolbox!

I am sad to say that I never took Physics, so when I started working with a bunch of 12 year old students on the subject....I was struggling. I bought this DVD to help the kids (since I couldn't) with the topic of levers and pulleys. This DVD really explains things in a simple and interesting way. Not only did the kids get a lot out of it...I did as well! Thanks, Disney! I liked this one sooooo much, I just bought 3 more from the series! Great Stuff!

Disney is one of the world's most trusted names when it comes to children's entertainment. What is less well known is the Disney commitment to high quality, kid friendly educational materials. "The Science of Disney Imagineering" is an impressive series of instructional DVDs specifically created for young viewers in grades 5 through 8 with a 30 minute running time. The three DVD productions focus upon a single science concept. "The Science of Disney Imagineering: Gravity" investigates the science and nature of the force behind such thrill rides as roller coasters and other major Disney theme park attractions. "The Science of Disney Imagineering: Levers & Pulleys" focuses on the mechanics of how Disney theme park elements such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant and other remarkable machines work. "The Science of Disney Imagineering: Trajectory" illustrates the role that forces and motion play in creating theme park rides such as the California Adventure's California Scramin' and Toy Story Midway Mania. Each of these superbly produced, informed and informative DVDs are enhanced with 'try it yourself' experiments that children can do to reinforce learning the key principles and concepts presented. All three of the "The Science of Disney Imagineering" titles are enthusiastically recommended for school and community library DVD collections, as well as an ideal supplement for home schooling science studies curricula.

Asa incorrectly identified the parts of levers for a couple of the examples, e.g., for a canoe paddle the effort is in the middle, not at the end like Asa stated. He would be correct if he was talking about an oar. My 8th grade students like Bill Nye videos more than the Imagineering ones.

I just love this series for Home Schooling. OK ~ sometimes they feel a bit like a commercial for Disney World, but it is a fun presentation on the topic and the children actually learn. In fact this is one educational series they will actually want to watch more than once, and that in itself is something!
