Editorial Reviews

Review

"The first forty pages or so of this voluminous work laid out the mind-over-matter philosophy of California mystic Ernest Holmes, which became a major influence on New Age spirituality. Holmes was a broad thinker and his work reflects a wide variety of influences, from Emerson to Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy. Holmes never became widely known but influenced many who did, such as Norman Vincent Peale. His books could be found in the libraries of George Lucas, Elvis Presley, and scholar of myth Joseph Campbell."
--TIME magazine

About the Author

Ernest Holmes (1887 – 1960) was the founder of the worldwide Religious Science Movement. A uniquely gifted scholar with a vast command of the world’s spiritual philosophies, his magnum opus, The Science of Mind, has been in continuous print since 1926. Other inspirational works include Creative Mind, This Thing Called You, The Art of Life, Creative Mind and Success, Love and Law, The Hidden Power of the Bible, and many others.

More About the Author

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes (1887-1960) was an avid student of the world's spiritual systems. He found in these a common denominator he called the Science Mind, a practical philosophy for abundant living. Beginning as self-educated lecturer, Holmes developed a large following of students and went on to formalize his work by founding Science of Mind magazine, an educational institute, and the United Church Religious Science. His writings have inspired the work of countless clergy, business leaders, physicians, and psychologists and have helped to shape the guiding principles of the modern human potential movement, both spiritual and secular. Born and raised in Maine, Holmes spent much of his adult life in California.

I already wrote a more extensive review about the "Definitive Edition" Science of Mind (the 1938 version), but I just wanted to say that it's nice to see, with the "Complete Edition", the original 1926 text finally getting a proper re-printing. Although I'm preferable to the 1938 version (I find the ideas more organized), the 1926 version is also an enlightening read, and there were a couple sections (notably the sections on psychic phenomena and the spirit of sex) which were omitted from the 1938 version (according to the biography, "The Was Ernest" by Reginald Armor, Ernest Holmes elected to take the section on psychic phenomena out of the 1938 version because so much of it just couldn't be proven). This version is nice because it has the complete 1926 text in the first section, then the complete 1938 text in the second section.

However, it should be noted that this is really more of a "reader's version". The "Definitive Edition" is a page-for-page correspondence to the 1938 textbook, which is the version most commonly used for SOM courses. I was hoping when this was released that they would keep the page-for-page correspondence for the 1938 section, but it's understandable why they didn't (to conserve space). However, this makes it difficult to use the "Complete Edition" for study courses (i.e. I'm doing the home study course "Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life", and all the textbook page references correspond to the 1938 "Definitive Edition" version). Additionally, the "Concordance to the Science of Mind" by Dr. Al Lowe & Rev. Martha Ann Stewart is the concordance to the 1938 version, again by page number, so that might also create some confusion. This is my only gripe with this printing. Otherwise, I think they did an outstanding job with it.

So if you're just getting this just to read, then I highly recommend it. But if you're getting a copy for SOM study courses, you'll also need a copy of the "Definitive Edition".

This includes both complete editions of Holme's tome, The Science of Mind, first published in 1926 then revised and published again in 1938. Both are worth reading as they approach the material from different angles.

Science of Mind (complete edition) is an excellent way to view our spiritual journey. I think Ernest Holmes channeled his work from God. For those raised on the Bible, he makes references to it and to Jesus quite often. The complete collection is the way to go. It is a thick book, but amazingly lightweight.

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes (1887-1960) was the founder of Religious Science, a part of the greater New Thought movement, whose spiritual philosophy is known as "The Science of Mind." He also wrote books such as The basic ideas of Science of Mind, How to Use the Science of Mind, Ernest Holmes Seminar Lectures, etc. [NOTE: Page numbers below refer to the 667-page hardcover edition.]

He wrote in the first chapter of this 1938 book, "the great Love of the Universe must be One with the great law of Its Own Being, and we approach Love through the Law. This, then, is the teaching: Love and Law. As the love of God is perfect, so the law of God is perfect. We must understand both." (Pg. 26) He adds, "Experience has taught us that the subjective tendency of this intelligent Law of creative force may consciously be directed and definitely used. This is the greatest discovery of all time. There is no mystery here, but a profound fact and a demonstrable one." (Pg. 31) Still later, he adds, "Back of the organism is the thinker and the doer---the Mind. This was the greatest discovery of all time, for it meant that the body without the thinker could not function." (Pg. 73)

He explains, "The Science of Mind, then, is the study of life and the nature of the laws of thought; the conception that we live in a spiritual Universe; that God is in, through, around and for us.
