Book Description

May 20, 2004 0765805812 978-0765805812

Many studies of the origins of National Socialism claim that the völkisch and proto-Nazi movement arose largely as a reaction to the materialistic ideas of nineteenth-century science and especially to the naturalistic philosophy of Ernst Haeckel and the German Monist League. Using hitherto unexplored material, Daniel Gasman calls this generalization into question. Arguing that the importance of science has been relatively neglected in accounts of the intellectual origins of Nazism, he attempts to show that Haeckel's "scientific" Darwinism, and his movement, the German Monist League, were proto-Nazi in character.

Contrary to popular belief, Haeckel's type of social Darwinism actually played a critical role in the formation of National Socialist ideology. In his new introduction, Gasman notes that recent research goes far to confirm Haeckel's role as an ideological progenitor of fascist ideology. This is true not only for Germany, but also for the birth of fascist thought in Italy and France. In general, Gasman claims, the history of science plainly reveals how Haeckel's social Darwinism nourished the roots of fascism no less than avant-garde modernism.

When The Scientific Origins of National Socialism initially appeared, the Times Literary Supplement called it a "very well-argued thesis... that is completely successful... and leaves the reader to extract his own moral lessons." Medical History, in its review of The Scientific Origins of National Socialism, said, "His book is essential for understanding modern Germany. It has a general message derived from the events in Germany, where scientific data were permitted to take on a mystical signficiance... with ghastly consequences." Bruce Chatwin, in the New York Review of Books, called the book "brilliant." Now available in paperback, with a new introduction by the author, this seminal work will be of interest to intellectual historians, as well as those interested in twentieth-century Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading October 3, 2004
By J A W
Format:Paperback
Short review -- get this book. It's only 180 pages or so, but it's an excellent reference book on your shelf the next time some numbskull lazily hurls around the "Nazi" label against any political ideology he or she opposes. Very well documented and researched.

This book describes the origins of National Socialist thought (the "Volk" movement), and its connections to Darwinism, evolution, and nature worship. The author does an excellent job at the connecting the dots between Ernst Haeckel's evolutionary Monism and Hitler's philosophy. This should be read by all, because the evil ideology of National Socialism is irresponsibly misrepresented in pop culture as a capitalistic, Christian enterprise, when nothing could be further from the truth. An excellent companion to "Nazi Economics" by Barkai, another good myth-buster.

It's kind of scary how little people know about the intellectual origins of Nazism, how it's glossed over by professors and "intellectuals" who find that the skeletal backbone of National Socialism hits a little too close to home.

2.0 out of 5 stars One-sided and Distorts the Reality of Haeckel's Views September 4, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Gasman's book is very one-sided and both cherry-picks and omits evidence to make his case that Haeckel's virulent anti-Semitism paved the way for the Nazis. Despite this, Gasman's views have been influential but this is beginning to change. Robert Richards, a distinguished historian who specializes in the history of evolutionary biology, has written many critiques of Gasman's work that are very convincing to me. See Richard's latest book, The Tragic Sense of Life: Ernst Haeckel and the Struggle over Evolutionary Thought. In short, Ernst Haeckel was not anti-Semitic and would have hated the Nazis if he had lived in their time. In fact, Haeckel was a philo-Semite. Richard's specifically refutes the contention that Haeckel's monism was influential in the creation of Nazism. The Nazis even specifically rejected monism and other of Haeckel's views as those that the party could support. Nazism did not find its origin in Haeckel or evolution, but in European Christian anti-Semitic bigotry, German nationalism, and fascist ideology. Unfairly blaming Haeckel for Nazism is a myth currently being marketed by aggressive Creationists. Even worse, the Creationists try to blame Darwin for the same thing, totally without evidence or reason, in order to demonize evolution in the public's mind. Blaming Darwin was not Gasman's intention, but because Haeckel was a totally-convinced Darwinist, Gasman is certainly aiding the Creationists with his flawed views.

Others have claimed that the Nazis were influenced by occult and pagan beliefs and the party developed its own religion separate and opposed to Christianity. This was only true, however, for Himmler and his SS. Hitler and the other top Nazis continued to claim they were Christians even if they didn't act like good ones. Hitler depended on European Christian anti-Semitism to win initial acceptance for his authority and to carry out his later malign activities.

Two appropriate Richard's papers that refute Gasman's claim are easily-accessible at http://home.uchicago.edu/~rjr6/articles/Haeckel--antiSemitism.pdf and http://home.uchicago.edu/~rjr6/articles/Myth.pdf. The substance of these two articles are incorporated into his excellent and convincing book.
