Editorial Reviews

Review

The big news out of the Tony nominations is, no question, The
Scottsboro Boys the last musical by the legendary songwriting
team of Kander & Ebb, which struggled to find an audience
on Broadway last fall and closed after only two months of
performances. Scottsboro received 12 Tony nominations
second to The Book of Mormon, which drew 14 nominations
as expected. Scottsboro was nominated for best musical,
best actor (Joshua Henry), two best featured actor nods, best
direction and best choreography for Susan Stroman, and best
score for John Kander and the late Fred Ebb. Will Scottsboro
producer Barry Weissler find a way to raise the money to bring
Scottsboro back to Broadway, as he suggested this winter he
would try to do? --The New York Times

An astounding production! The Scottsboro Boys will leave you
shattered. It s the definition of inspired theatre. --Huffington Post

Pitch perfect! A staggeringly inventive piece of musical theatre!
Entertainment of the highest order, with inspired direction and
choreography by Susan Stroman. An exhilarating evening of theatre! --Associated Press

5.0 out of 5 stars GENTLEMEN, BE SEATED! October 14, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
John Kander and the late Fred Ebb have a knack of working on dark, provocative stories and filling them with infectiously toe-tapping songs.

Cabaret--The rise to power of the Nazi
Chicago--Women who kill and beat the rap

And now The Scottsboro Boys--a story about 9 young black males falsely accused and convicted of raping two white girls. The story is told as a Minstrel show featuring John Cullum as the interlocutor, and his two co-horts, Mr Bones and Mr. Tambo.
The show even depicts the road toward racial equality as the opening scene is of a black woman sitting on a bench waiting for a bus and the final scene when she boards the bus she is told, "Coloreds sit in the back" and she refuses saying "I won't sit in the back, no more. No More."

The opening number "Minstrel March/Hey, Hey Hey" and the closer "The Scottsboro Boys" are shamelessly toe-tapping, banjo strumming, thigh-slapping tambourine ringing songs but the lyrics for The Scottsboro Boys" despite the infectious melody, are contradictory in tone as it relates the sad fates of the 9 young black males.

The entire score is excellent and along with the two numbers I have mentioned, other songs such as, "Alabama Ladies" "Electric Chair" "Go Back Home" "Shout" "Make Friends With The Truth" "That's Not The Way We Do Things"
"Southern Days" are stand-outs.

Do yourself a favor and get this CD if you are a fan of musical theatre and although "Curtains" was believed to have been the last complete Kander and Ebb score, with the surfacing of The Scottsboro Boys here's hoping there are a few other gems waiting in the wings.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING November 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD
One of the greatest musicals to ever hit Broadway. A horrible part of American history sent these boys into oblivion. They now have a voice with this beautiful production. The music and lyrics by Kander and Ebb and the brilliant choreography and direction by Susan Stroman will make you laugh, cry and want to come back and see it again and again. Playing at the Lyceum theater on Broadway, NYC. [...] Simply astounding.

If you want to shake your butt like in Chicago , listen to this score.
Minstrel March,Alabama Ladies,Electric Chair , Shout are songs that will shake
your anatomy.
The score has a song that ranks with the greatest show stoppers.
It is called GO BACH HOME
A bonus track has composer John Kander singing his heart out with his superb piano background.
I love the pictures that come with this CD,especially those men's caps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Broadway
I have not seen the show, but I greatly enjoy the CD. It's right up there in the top of the Kander and Ebb musicals. I've not much of a fan of the Broadway of the last 30 years. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A great finale for Kander and Ebb
The previous Kander and Ebb score, "Curtains," felt a little too dull edged, especially coming from the creators of "Cabaret," "Chicago," and "Kiss of the Spider Woman. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Final Kander and Ebb show one of their best
This show is the last Kander and Ebb show we will ever see. It's treatment by protestors and the fact that it closed long before it should have is a terrible reflection on us. Read more
