5.0 out of 5 stars Paul McCartney and U2 can't both be wrong...
When a band with one album is chosen by Paul McCartney to open for him in his big return to Shea Stadium (at the new Citi Field), and by U2 to open for them as they start their tour in Dublin, you would guess that these lads from Dublin are pretty good. The fact that, of the 10 songs on their CD, 6 have gone Number One in Europe, would confirm the 'pretty good' status,...

When a band with one album is chosen by Paul McCartney to open for him in his big return to Shea Stadium (at the new Citi Field), and by U2 to open for them as they start their tour in Dublin, you would guess that these lads from Dublin are pretty good. The fact that, of the 10 songs on their CD, 6 have gone Number One in Europe, would confirm the 'pretty good' status, and get them towards 'really good'. Hear them live, and you will know that their performances are often better than the recorded versions, and singer Danny O'Donohue is an amazing, soulful, singer who will have you thinking Bono one minute and then do a dead-on Sting the next. His range is amazing and his Celtic soul sound is a welcome change to the dreary 'Boom Boom GaGa' sound of Pop Radio these days.

The history here is two of the members (Danny and Mark) were in a boy band called MyTown that had a huge signing bonus and then flopped. They were supposed to be an Irish version of NSYNC. After that they went to the US and worked with a lot of the top R&B producers and honed their craft. Mark is supposed to be one of the best choreographers in Ireland, but now stands still and plays the guitar while singing background or rapping. The boys are all jeans and work boots or sneakers, and the glitter is long gone. It works and they should be around for a long while.

Favorite songs include: We Cry, The Man Who Can't Be Moved, Breakeven, Before the Worst, Fall For Anything, Talk You Down, and the End Where I Begin. Good, but not Great (for me): Rusty Halo. Many friends LOVE it though.... Danny is definitely channeling Sting on that track, and the bass line is definitely Sting-like. This could fit on a Police album without modification. Not a fan of: If You See Kay...they are a little too clever here (think of each word as a letter). Kills the song for me. (I wonder if Britney's writers pilfered this idea when they wrote If You Seek Amy...? Creepy to think of little girls singing along...) The songs are a blend of pop, soul, rap, rock, and R & B. I would say the lyrics, which are really important to me, are not as poignant as U2, The Clash, Dylan, etc. but definitely a cut-above the generic pop song, and the band clearly tried not to write a whole album of love songs. We Cry is about how life can trash people's dreams and be brutally difficult for many. Fall For Anything is about developing boundaries (You have to stand for something or you'll fall for anything), but in a boy-girl social context. Rusty Halo is about how fear and the rat-race can l overwhelm a person's spirit and cause them to forget the right things.

9 out of 10 ain't bad, to paraphrase Jim Steinman. Everybody I have told about this album has come back to me raving about it, and have become fanatical fans. The bottom line is the songs are very well crafted, (mostly) love songs, that are extremely catchy, well sung, with good lyrics, that you'll be singing along to for weeks. Get this album... you will love it. A solid 4 and a half stars for me. And try to catch a performance online or live, you will be blown away by how good they are in person, often with just an acoustic guitar and box to bang on...

I've been waiting for over a year to buy this CD. I love The Script! I tried to buy the CD when I traveled to the UK in June only to find out it wasn't available until September! Now it's finally in the U.S. so I downloaded the MP3 and I'm not disappointed!

Top 3 songs: We Cry; Before The Worst; Breakeven

While and after listening to The Script's self-titled debut album, immense musical influences may have listeners' ears whirling with one name after another. There is no denying that all of the songs heard through out the record have that FM radio middle of the road feel to it. And to add to that comparison, the album artwork is very much reminiscent of the illustrations of past legendary rock album covers of the late 1960 and 1970s that had been done by artist Peter Corriston, which speaks for itself, although it was not done by Corriston.

But nonetheless, all ten tracks on The Script are distinct and memorable. But the highlights off the record are the first two singles off the record "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" and "Breakeven" which contain lyrics and choruses that may be hard to forget. In addition to the "hits," for this listener, other tracks have their moments and undeniable influence, "Rusty Halo" is a melodic cross between Sting and The Police or U2 that possibly could have been one of their songs off any one of their 1980s albums, especially with lead vocalist Donny O'Donogue's uncanny vocal resemblance and the rock and reggae concluding chorus. And beyond past comparisons to recent ones, "Talk You Down" and "Fall For Anything" sound similar to The Fray and Coldplay.

The Script is a refreshing album and band to listen to more than once because of the melodic collection of songs that they perform and most likely will be remembered after listening to the entire record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise, April 12, 2010

I picked up this album when it was featured as the mp3 deal of the day for only a few bucks. I played the samples and recognized "Breakeven" from the radio and have not been disappointed! This is an album is full of infectious chorus's and has no tracks that need to be skipped during playback. "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" is a great story of a man attempting to find a girl he once met. Other highlights, "Before the Worst" and "Fall for Anything".

This is one of the top albums out there! Everyone must own it! One of the albums out there that you can listen to from start to finish-- there aren't any songs on this album that you'd want to skip! The song lyrics, and messages, are ones that anyone can relate to.

5.0 out of 5 stars British music --- just better., January 23, 2010
This review is from: The Script [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
This is seriously one of the best albums I have ever heard. If you like bands w/ a U2 and Coldplay like sound you will love this band. The Script CD is sheer perfection. The lead singers voice is wonderful, the music is awesome. And the lyrics are so good, not just fluff. The songs are so well written and well sung. It's definitely a band that you need to watch closely. I wish they were bigger in the US, cause they deserve to be. This is an album that is well worth buying the whole CD; each song is so incredible. I really can't pick favorites -- they are all so good! One of my favorite all time bands.
