Editorial Reviews

The rousing score to The Sea Hawk is perhaps one of the most thrilling pieces of music tied to a vintage swashbuckler. Conductor Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra recreate Korngold's classic film scores in pristine stereo sound. Other film scores include: Of Human Bondage; Between Two Worlds; The Sea Wolf; The Constant Nymph; Kings Row; Anthony Adverse; Deception; Devotion and Escape Me Never.

I have been using this recording as my favorite demonstration recording since it was first released on RCA in the 70's. Korngold's music is suitably sweeping and lush and the sound is impeccable. Don't let this one get away!

Here it is, the album that sparked renewed general interest in the film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold and also inspired George Lucas to seek music of an epic, swashbuckling nature for Star Wars. This is actually a reissue of one of two versions of this album. The other version had a bit more music, particularly from The Sea Hawk, but not as good sound as this one. Score excerpts are included not only for The Sea Hawk, but also Captain Blood, Anthony Adverse, Juarez, Kings Row, Of Human Bondage and others. The complete Sea Hawk score is available on Naxos, conducted by William Stromberg, and a suite from the film was also recorded by Andre Previn, though that rendition has more the feel of a concert hall than a movie theater. Anyway, for completeness I'd recommend the Stromberg, but these vintage recordings conducted by Gerhardt and produced by the composer's son have a great feel to them. Highly recommended.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold was a child prodigy, a musical genius whose talent was on a scale with Mozart and Brahms. Great things were expected from young Korngold, but they were apparently not to be. He fled to America to escape the Nazis, and became a citizen of the land that gave him refuge. Korngold sought work were he could get it, and in the USA in the 1930s that was in Hollywood writing film scores, a form of composition that did not command respect among the connoisseurs of serious music.

Just not quite as full as the original soundtrack score, but still the sweeping Korngold melodies of the day, that made Michael Curtiz's and Warner Bros' movies so popular at the box office.
