Editorial Reviews

2011 album, the fifth solo album from the artist formerly known as Sporty Spice (and one fifth of Spice Girls). From opener and title track 'The Sea' a downtempo pacifier, complete with crashing waves and a lulling string section to the roughed up Alanis Morisette-esque 'Beautiful Mind', Melanie C evokes multiple musical identities with this impressive album. Poptastic single 'Think About It' is a sure fire dance-floor hit, oozing with slicked-back sophistication, whereas 'All About You' is a soaring piano ballad, poised on a dramatic drum roll and was co-written by Guy Chambers,

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Effort by Melanie C September 5, 2011
By Stormy
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
One thing I always loved about Melanie is that she seems very genuine and that comes through in her music. No gimics, nothing vulgar, just good enjoyable music. My musical tastes have changed over the years from dance, hip hop, and pop to mostly alternative and indie rock but I always buy Melanie's albums and I always enjoy them.

If you liked Melanie's previous albums, you won't be disappointed with The Sea. It continues her style of pop mixed with rock and occasional dance. Many of the songs incorporate elements of a few different styles so they can be hard to fit into one category.

Here's a quick run-down of the songs:
1) The Sea - Kind of dark, definitely interesting song. A good way to kick off the album. My second favorite track.
2) Weak - My favorite track. Rock mixed with Middle Eastern beats.
3) Think About It - The most poppy song on the album. Sounds like it could easily fit in on American radio.
4) Beautiful Mind - Nice song. Reminds me of Carolyna.
5) One by One - An acoustic pop song
6) Stupid Game - Really cool song. Kind of 80s-ish.
7) All About You - Slower acoustic song about breaking up.
8) Burn - Pop song similar to previous Mel C songs
9) Drown - Ballad with a bit of an edge
10) Get Out of Here - Kind of old-fashioned belt-it-out-type song
11) Enemy - Another really cool song. A rock ballad with a powerful symphony.

To sum it up, this is an album I can listen to without skipping tracks. Not every track is a masterpiece, but I can find things about all of them to like. If you like even 1 or 2 Melanie C songs, I think you should check out this album. Thanks for another great album, Melanie!

Format:Audio CD
If you love her in spice girls and her solo career. The sea is a another great album to own.
Melanie C doesn't dissapoint with her 5th album the sea.
There's too many great songs on this like think about it , stupid game , one by one , all about you and enemy.
For this time around I like to see her do a world tour with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whatever you listen to, this is worth your time. June 10, 2012
By Matt
Format:Audio CD
This is the album of hers that I would most recommend to people that aren't fans. I remember her saying something about it being her best one, and while it's not my favorite of hers, it very well may be her best. The songs are very ambitious, and they work. It has a great vibe throughout, and has an almost epic quality. She still sounds way better than other contemporary pop artists when she sings pop songs, but it's awesome that she isn't limited at all. If there is one thing her discography shows, it's that she can sing anything, and this album just solidifies that. What an addicting voice, I only wish she would tour America.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe she is not a bigger star... April 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD
That just goes to show you what our culture values. Though the Spice Girls were about their image and fame (and boy did we eat that up) Melanie has been about the music. Pop music is still all about image nowadays and since she wasn't the Spice to primp herself up to the extreme and marry a celebrity, she has fallen to the wayside. Or maybe if she got involved in a huge scandal or shaved her head or did lots of drugs with public displays of trashyness we would be all over her. Instead she battled depression secretly, and fought off an eating disorder in private. Oh, that must be boring huh? Venting aside...

I did hold out hope that the greatness that is this album would bring her back. Every track, from "Think About It" to "Stupid Game" to "Enemy" is perfection. There is so much variety, and she nails each song. I remember listening to this album, loudly, in pitch black from start to finish the night after I finally got this album (I read a review/tip somewhere to do this). I felt so many emotions. This is definitely one of my favorite albums, alongside Beautiful Intentions.

People complained that there was a lack of dance songs, but even her biggest hit "I Turn to You" was a regular album track before it was remixed INTO a dance track. If this album took off I could have seen "Drown" or "Burn" remixed as such, but it looks like that will never be. Though it did not get the attention or acclaim it deserves, it holds a place in my heart and I hope that the commercial failure does not stop Melanie from creating another album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MIND-BLOWING collection of songs!! February 17, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This by-far my favorite. I recently checked out Sporty's solo material and am kicking myself for having missed out on it from the beginning. I drive like 30 hours a week.... now I really look forward to it because I own ALL of Melanie C.'s discography. Love watching the videos on YouTube and her Official Site. The Track by Track interviews on The Sea on YouTube are a MUST-SEE!!!!
Not only do they showcase her talent, but listening to her interviews it is clear to see that she is a super sweet, fun, down-to-earth- yet OUT OF THIS WORLD person.
I cannot wait for the next one....

Arrived on time and in great condition. I bought this because I liked the singer but had never heard the album and I was surprised to instantly like a lot of the songs immediately.
