I have seen Rahim Alhaj perform and this CD is one way to keep his wonderful concert with me always. He is one of the best oud players in the world and plays with so much emotion and skill that it is breathtaking. This CD focuses on songs about Iraq and his hometown of Baghdad and in the current situation, a better understanding of the Arab culture and incredible musical talents of that culture, like Rahim Alhaj, is a must. Rahim talks about his hope for peace, for freedom for the Iraqi people, and of personal hope, loss, and pain. This CD is one of my favorite and I've given it to many friends as a gift as well.

The CD is fine. Although on closer listening it reveals a lot of concessions to a European musical ear. The "oud" playing is of course of a high, virtuostic standard, and must be commended for that. It makes a welcome addition to a collection on CD of "oud" players, which now includes Munir Bashir, Anouar Brahim, El Maloumi Driss, to name but a few.All of these required a lot of research in order to obtain them but well worth the effort.
