Book Description

"And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth." Genesis 9:11

The Earth burns.

Nick and Beth survive, but few others do. Were they just in the right place at the right time, to live, to pass what they have learned to their offspring, or is there an even deeper reason? Is it God's or Nature's plan? Others survive and a clan developes. Ancient skills are revived, few have the knowledge needed.

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change."
Charles Darwin

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept, more plot needed though May 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The concept behind this book was interesting and not something I had read before. The writing is decent, an editor would have made it better though. I wish there was a bit more confrontation or plot. There's just a lot of walking and gathering and walking and gathering and repeat. However, the author does do a good job in filling the walking with meaningful thoughts/conversations about the future of earth. It's a good read for someone who's looking for a philosophical story. However, the formatting towards the last 25% of the book becomes messed up. Be prepared for constant font changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention grabbing! March 4, 2013
Format:Paperback
I love this book because it is very intriguing. It makes you think this could actually happen. It was full of edge of your seat action. I kept turning the page to see what would happen next.
The only thing I didn't like about it was that it could have been a .little more definitive as far as some scene that left you hanging, as to how the characters handled a situation.
Overall it was very well written without being over the head science. Like the cover says "Sci-Fi for the working guy" Love that phrase. Hope there will be more books to come. Thanks for the trip!

5.0 out of 5 stars New World Survival; man vs environment April 29, 2013
By K. Berg
Format:Kindle Edition
I very much enjoyed this book. It combines our current world and our disabling dependency on "things" and corporations, with the old world survivalist; foraging and utilizing anything and everything for every day survival and meeting basic needs. These characters travel a hard road after an extinction level event and have to relearn how to live, sometimes at a cost. Some characters are lovable and encouraging, and some are a harsh reality of times forgotten.

It grabbed me at every level; physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It will take you on a whirlwind ride and leave you feeling like, "This really could happen," or make you wonder what would you do if you were in any of the characters situations. The story has a little bit of everything and nothing too over the top. It was a very well balanced read that could be put down in between adventures (chapters), or read through in just a few sittings if you can't stand leaving a journey unfinished. I was surprised at the twists in the end and was enthralled with the epilogue. I can't help but wonder if Dale WILL write another book or two...

*Keep up the good work, I will keep my ears and eyes open anticipating what comes of the new species.

5.0 out of 5 stars What would happen if the meteor is not stopped? November 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
i thoroughly enjoyed reading this debut novel by Dale Langlois. It gave me pause to realize that the premise is not only probable but very possible. As we journey with the characters' struggle for survival after an extinction level event, we are challenged not to take our current existence for granted. I highly recommend this book. I hope there will be more to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars A more realistic version of survival struggles October 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read quite a lot and this book stands out in my memory. This isn't your usual survival story - it is a grim situation and I am not talking about zombies. Not only are most people wiped out but also almost all supplies, including almost all wildlife. These are real people who try to keep going. Really good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars I liked it but.. September 18, 2013
By Maria
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really liked this book. It had all the right ingredients, I couldn't put it down till i finished it.
I read another review where the reader says it has too much violence, I don't think that's bad , considering the type of book this is. That same violence, which I agree, is a little too hard to digest at times is found just 2 or 3 times throughout the book, and not for long, but is enough to get you nervous for the rest of the pages, which I liked because it had the right amount of adrenaline.
I think it wouldn't be realistic if it didn't show all about the human nature, the good and the bad. This book reminded me of "The Road", the movie with Vigo Mortensen, one of the saddest and best movies I have seen (even though I dont like sad, It had hope during the movie and at the end).
This book has good and bad people, all struggling to survive.
So why just 3 stars? because I didn't like the ending. It left me sad and without hope.

***SPOILERS************************
I didn't understand why the author made us like the main characters and then end it like this. Don't get me wrong, I think it was a good ending , but almost every other post apocalyptic or dystopian book I have read teaches us what is going to happen if we dont change our ways , but this book says there is nothing these poeple could do.
**************end of spoilers******************

I dont know, maybe I was not in the right mood. Altogether it was a great read, well written and fast paced.I just didn't like the ending

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! August 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading a lot of the other reviews I have to say a few things. I loved this book! It was a fantastic debut for this author. I am a Christian and I didn't find this book vulgar or violent. The story is well told and informative without being too science like or too religious. A nice balance of both. I found the characters were very personable. Ordinary people doing what they have to do to survive. I found the plot original-nice to read a post apocalyptic book not about zombies. It was definitely a page turner from start to finish. Had me on the edge of my seat until the last page. The ending was very interesting. All in all job well done. Hope to see more from this author.

More About the Author

Dale started writing in his mid-forties without even knowing how to type. A book from the local library and two days of practice sped up his goal, but he still needed help from others with writing skills, something rare in the rural area he lives. He approached the retired editor of the local newspaper, and then drove fifty miles to the nearest writing group he could find. Eventually he found The Adirondack Center for Writing in Paul Smiths. There he met other authors who have reached their dreams and he learned from them, he also met literary agents and publishers who taught him the industry.
Once his first draft was finished he realized he needed and editor. $1,600 dollars and a year later his novel, "The Second Intelligent Species: The Cyclical Earth" was ready for publication. He decided to self-publish. Once frowned on by the literary world, doing it yourself became the way to go for someone who is new to the world of books. Kindles are all over the planet and the prices meant buying a work from an unknown would get him readers he would otherwise never see going the traditional method of getting an agent and publisher.
While doing free promotions his novel made it up to number three and four top best seller in the dystopian, science fiction adventure categories. Rankings in actual sales are proving harder to climb, but are steady. With nearly three thousand books out into the world, he has reached readers in Europe. The reviews are coming in and it seems many like the story and his writing voice.
His book is available on Amazon for $13.95 and the E-book is on Kindle for $3.50. You can take a chance to win a free copy through a Goodreads promotion.
