Leo F. Buscaglia, Ph.D, Glenbrook, Nevada --Letter written to Robert Collier Publications

Having been reading and studying prosperity books for the past few years, I have recently come upon the works of Robert Collier particularly. The Secret of the Ages; and The Amazing Secrets of the Masters of the Far East.
Both books are biblically based and absolutely helpful in dealing with everyday challenges and provides thought provokers to assist in whatever challenges I may be going through in any particular circumstance at any given moment.

About the Author

Robert Collier was born April 19, 1885, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Mary Ferguson and John Collier. His mother died when he and his older brother were not yet teenagers. His father traveled widely as a foreign correspondent for Collier's Magazine, which was founded and published by his uncle, Peter F. Collier.
Robert was educated in a church seminar school and was expected to become a priest, but before taking his vows he decided against the life of a clergyman, and headed for West Virginia to seek his fortune. There he worked as a mining engineer, learning first-hand how to deal with both humanity, and the trials of life. He was a prolific reader, and the books in the mining company's office, which included applied business correspondence and books on advertising, gave him the basics of writing that became his career.
After eight years in West Virginia, he went to New York City and worked in the advertising department of the P.F. Collier Publishing Company. With the help and guidance of such experts as Bruce Barton and Fred Stone, he developed ideas in sales copy, persuading the top men to test them in new circulars he wrote.
The results were fantastic. He sold many thousands of the Harvard Classics -- a five-foot shelf of books by Dr. Elliott -- and his circulars on the O. Henry stories brought in orders for over two million dollars. These successes were followed by orders for over 70,000 books on The History of the World War.
Because of an earlier, seemingly undiagnosable illness which he finally cured through Christian Science, Bob became interested in health products. He felt that a good 98% of our illnesses came from chemically treated, denatured foods. From his own experience came the desire to investigate how the Mind could so quickly and surely cure an illness which doctors had been working on for months; clearly there must be powers in the Mind he'd never suspected. Furthermore, if it had dominion over his physical self, why could it not cure business problems too? Why could it not correct any financial lack? Why could it not bring him anything of good he might wish?
He decided it could -- and proceeded to find the way. For long months, he studied hundreds of books and courses on everything relating to metaphysics, the occult, and success in life. Whole religions seemed to be built on it. He delved into the deepest mysteries of the Masters. It was a long time before he began to find parts that were really workable in everyday life; a long time before he realized tangible results from his efforts; but when results began, they came quickly.
For some time Robert Collier had had the idea for a set of books on practical psychology. He put this idea into action, working night and day writing the books. Within six months of publication of these books he received more than one million dollars-worth of orders for them. The books were entitled, The Secret of the Ages. He sold over 300,000 sets of them. He also received thousands of letters telling of results obtained from reading the books -- they really worked.
Robert Collier wrote four more courses, which he sold separately as The God in You, The Secret Power, The Magic Word and The Law of the Higher Potential. He later combined this excellent material into one book, titling it, The Law of the Higher Potential. It has since been renamed: Riches Within Your Reach He also condensed the seven volumes of The Secret of the Ages into one book, which has proven to be a best seller for many, many years. It has been translated into German, Italian, French, and Spanish, and sold all over the world. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The Secret of the Ages is the Law of Attraction. Many of the other writers in this category actually quote this author, and refer to this book, which is partly how I discovered it.

Coincidentally, my yoga teacher was quoting the Law of Attraction in class, and I really appreciated what she was saying. When I picked up the book after class, I noticed that it was a 30 year old well used hardcover copy of this book. The pages she held with paperclips were the ones she would regularly quote in class while instucting us to hold a positive mental image.

As I leafed through the book, I was impressed by it, and immediately ordered it off Amazon.

If you are like me, as you read this book you will gain many profound insights, and many great visual and inspiring examples of how others apply the LOA in their lives. If you are like me, then the further you get into this book, the more you will appreciate that this may be one of the best books you will ever read.

Desire is an important motive factor in manifesting what you want in your life. In fact, without desire nothing much happens. If you can feel more desire for something, you can be do and have what you want more quickly. The stronger your desire and motivation, the more likely it is that you will get what you want. So, the more you desire and can imagine the value that this book will bring, the more likely you are to buy it. Hope this was useful.

Like The Secret and other modern books, Mr. Collier wrote The Secret of the Ages in order to make money. About this there can be no question. One only has to read his famous book (in advertising circles) called The Robert Collier Letter Book to learn this from his own mouth.

The truth is that Mr. Collier (and modern success teachers) loved this concept because people will keep coming back for more of it decade after decade even though their lives do not always improve. It is a clear historical fact that Robert Collier developed multiple series based around this same concept of attraction (The Secret of the Ages, The Life Magnet and The Book of Life early on and the Law of Higher Potential later) and sold the same information again and again with different stories. Since the "Law of Attraction" or "you get what you think" is really just the first step toward success, authors and speakers are sure to keep the flocks coming back as long as they indicate that it is THE key to success rather than the FIRST STEP to success.

In The Robert Collier Letter Book he lays out all of the details of how he tested different letters until he found the one that would get people to buy. In fact, he admits that he had not even written the books when he sent out the letters. The order came in so fast that he "worked day and night getting the books written." He also said that "a lot of books came back. They would, when oversold as much as this letter and circular did oversell them. The idea had been excellent, BUT NO BOOK EVER WRITTEN COULD QUITE COME UP TO SUCH A PROMISE." {Capitalized for emphasis.}

Those words screamed out at me when I read them in the only advanced success book Robert Collier ever wrote - his sales letter book.

A few years ago I found a set of books in my Grandmothers house in the attic. It was a series of little books called the secret of the ages. The books are copy righted 1926. It must be one of the original books written. When I read the series it changed my life. When I went to this site I was glad to see that this author is still in print. The philosophy and words of this book still carry over into life of today. It is a must read for anyone floating through life without a clue. READ IT and I'll think you'll agree.

Robert Collier's works are an example of timeless wisdom and life-changing truths (ie. "Visualize this thing you want. See it, feel it, believe in it. Make your mental blueprint and begin." ) With this book, one has the opportunity to change one's life forever. I highly recommend this book to any persons who wish to transform their lives from the everyday grind into the materialization of their dreams.

First off, let me say the "content" of this book deserves a 5 star rating. I won't rate this aspect of the book since so many other reviewers have covered the content in such a fine way.

It was very difficult for me to give this book anything less than 5 stars, but felt it necessary to warn others of the poor re-production of this particular edition. It is in Public Domain, therefore, any publisher can re-produce without paying royalties. It's a great price at $5.99, but in this instance I think you get what you pay for. The typesetting is probably 8-9 points (a good 1/3 smaller than standard) and the 'leading' (the space between the lines) is much too tight as well. For most people (even with excellent reading eyesight) this alone will eventually cause eyestrain. For those of us who already require a little help with reading glasses, it is quite difficult to read - for any length of time anyway. The focus and concentration required to read this edition takes away from its wonderful content.

PS: While I fully embrace the wisdom of Robert collier, here's just a side-note about about what another reviewer mentioned as a warning regarding his philosophy on health and healing. He died of cancer at age 65. His belief, along with Mary Baker Eddy, that illness can not survive if you deny its existence (greatly simplified here) didn't work for him - and it didn't work for Wallace Wattles (another noteworthy writer from the New Thought Movement of the early 20th century who died an untimely death). perhaps this is because this basic belief fails to address what may have caused the disease in the first place. Therefore, denying only the disease, does not deny the possible wrong thinking that may have brought it about.
