Editorial Reviews

Review

"The message I had was more than about the book," Chiagouris says. "Young people or anyone has to know their value and be proud of it. No one else is going to know your value unless you market it. And if you can't sell yourself, what can you sell?"

*disclaimer* clearly almost all the reviews on this book are fake which I could see before buying the book; however, my score is based off of actually having read the book and not the sleazy attempt at selling more copies of the book through higher ratings.

Perhaps it is because my majors in college both studied closely human nature and how we present ourselves in different situations (communication studies and sociology), but I found this book to be written at a very low level and with not that great of information included. First, the reading level couldn't be over about 8th grade (and that's me being generous). That fact was easy for me to get past, however, because I realize that not everybody who goes through college pick majors that are reading and writing based like mine were.

What I could not get past was how elementary the information was in the book. I get it - we need to set a foundation for those who have no experience getting a job, but this was ridiculous. Without giving away anything that is in the book, I can say that most of the information was common sense and I learned even before going to high school. Recommendations on how to write a cover letter and resume were very poor. It recommends things like making a bullet list on your cover letter and fill that list with items from your resume. It doesn't matter whether your asking your school counselor or human resource manager - they will tell you not to do that. Another example would be putting your interests on your resume. I know that use to be common years ago, but current employers don't care about whether you like soccer.

Given the fact that this was written at an 8th grade level and the information is common sense, a more appropriate title for this book would have been "the obvious things you should have already been doing to get a job after high school." College students and alumni - do yourself a favor and go see your college career counselor and skip this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Graduation Gift July 13, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book as a graduation gift because the title really caught my attention and the fact that the author is a marketing professional that has worked on major accounts AND is a professor in a university made me feel that I have stumbled across the perfect gift. I know that recent college grads have the unfortunate task of overcoming the struggle to find their first job after college in a difficult job market. I think this book will help focus the graduate on what is essential to landing a job--and not repeating the typical advice that is often found in other job search books. I especially liked the chapter with the sample interview questions and answers. Chapter 3 is packed with useful info! That chapter alone was worth purchasing this book.

I received this book as a gift from my Professor when I lost my full-time position at a firm post graduation. I can begin by saying the information in this book is invaluable in getting a job. All the best advice you've ever been given by your teachers and various professionals throughout your career is compiled here in a step-by-step guide to finding a great job. The book guides you through every intricate detail from narrowing down job choices to what truly interests you, intricately preparing your resume according to a job position, mock interview questions, as well as salary negotiations (once you get the job!) There are also many other answers to questions that you may have along the way. You learn to market yourself as an individual and begin to think of yourself as a brand. The job search is rocky after college and thanks to this book, it's been smooth sailing. 5 STARS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding advice for grads! July 12, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book provides excellent 'insider info' on what it takes to get a job in today's ever so competitive marketplace. It contains very detailed tips and tricks on how to prepare for a productive job search. The book also supplies detailed questions on what to expect from prospective employers during the interview process. This intelligence is of utmost importance when you need to be on top of your game to ultimately get that dream job.

I highly recommend this book to all grads and believe that professors, too, should be marketing it to their students when they are about to enter the most crucial time of searching for a job. The advice in this book can really help these job seekers stand out in the eyes of a prospective employer.

As a person who straddles both the academic world as a part-time professor and an executive at a small company I strongly endorse the approach taken in this book to managing the post-graduation job search. College students are faced with a workplace that has become increasingly difficult to penetrate. Advances in technology have allowed companies to both become both more productive with existing workers and to outsource jobs to less expensive international markets. When combined with many experienced and trained employees who have been laid off domestically competing for lower-level positions it has become critical that students use effective marketing tools to sell themselves to potential employers. Students are also faced with college placement offices and placement professionals whose budgets have been slashed diminishing their ability to help with career placement and advice.

I have interacted with Dr. Chiarouris on both a professional and academic basis and can attest to his uncanny ability to help design and implement effective marketing solutions. The approach taken in this book is similar to one deployed many times for product and service brands. It is a clever marketing strategy and one that if deployed as suggested in the book is sure to help increase a college grads chances of landing an attractive job after graduation.
