Book Description

F. B. Meyer - (1847-1929), Baptist pastor and evangelist in England
Frederick Brotherton Meyer was born in London. He attended Brighton College and graduated from the University of London in 1869. He studied theology at Regent's Park College, Oxford and began pastoring churches in 1870. His first pastorate was at Pembroke Baptist Chapel in Liverpool. In 1872 he pastored Priory Street Baptist Church in York. While he was there he met the American evangelist Dwight L. Moody, whom he introduced to other churches in England. The two preachers became lifelong friends.
Other churches he pastored were Victoria Road Church in Leicester (1874-1878), Melbourne Hall in Leicester (1878- 1888) and Regent's Park Chapel in London (1888-1892). In 1895 Meyer went to Christ Church in Lambeth. At the time only 100 people attended the church, but within two years over 2,000 were regularly attending. He stayed there for fifteen years, and then began traveling to preach at conferences and evangelistic services. His evangelistic tours included South Africa and Asia. He also visited the United States and Canada several times. He spent the last few years of his life working as a pastor in England's churches, but still made trips to North America, including one he made at age 80.

Meyer was part of the Higher Life Movement and was known as a crusader against immorality. He preached against drunkenness and prostitution. He is said to have brought about the closing of hundreds of saloons and brothels.

Meyer wrote over 40 books, including Christian biographies and devotional commentaries on the Bible. He, along with seven other clergymen, was also a signatory to the London Manifesto asserting that the Second Coming was imminent in 1918. His works include The Way Into the Holiest:, Expositions on the Epistle to the Hebrews (1893) ,The Secret of Guidance, Our Daily Homily and Christian Living.

5.0 out of 5 stars A much needed work on the subject of being guided by God December 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book will help a Christian discern God's guiding influence.
There are many books on the subject, but this one helps a person dodge the pitfalls and dangers of self-deception that often accompanies the pursuit.
Others are often more trouble than they are worth; how often do people say that God told them this or that, when all it is is a case of indigestion from too much cheese on their pizza.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic January 5, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am so glad the work of F. B. Meyer is available now on the Kindle. These classic works are so much more full of spiritual "meat" than most books published today. Meyer was a great expositor of Scripture and man of God. At these prices, one should feast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes I feel stupid.. March 19, 2012
Format:Paperback
F.B. Meyer in this book answers that condition with this statement, "Oh, weary, perplexed and stupid children, believe in the great love of God, and cast yourselves upon it, sure that He will come down to your ignorance, and suit Himself to your needs, and will take 'the lambs in His arms and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young."

So much in this book for a thirsty soul.

What can I say except this is a fabulous book written by F.B. Meyer. It's one of my top favorite reads along with the Bible (of course), Knowing God by J. I. Packer, Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and The Christian in complete armour by William Gurnall (a great 3 book series on Spiritual warfare).

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenging and thought provoking book March 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am interested in gaining insights from people who have demonstrated in practical ways how their relationship with God has transformed their life. Knowing that God loves us and wants to be involved in our lives can be a powerful motivation to discover ways to be sure you recognize God's presence and are effectively following His guidance. This book had a great deal of helpful and spiritually challenging insights that will assist my daily life. I would recommend it to anyone serious about the pursuit of biblical information that has the potential to change their lives in positive ways.
