Not really a meditation CD
on June 16, 2014
This is a recording of affirmations repeated by Deepak Chopra that focus around his spiritual philosophy which happens to be *very* New Age. Some of the things he is saying are soothing and easily accessible, but most of them are hard to digest, understand or agree with. He claims that the whole universe is an infinite string of consciousness and that everything that surrounds you yourself including is just a manifestation of that consciousness. He talks about enlightenment and how the most enlightened do nothing but yet participate in all activity (pretty strange). I guess the idea is that you don't create your environment or your thoughts, it's your thoughts that create everything around you, and it's all just a dream. Death is "a creative opportunity" to move to another state of consciousness. I might have not gotten all of it right, but that's the kind of things you'll be listening to.
In my opinion, this CD is for people who attempt to deepen their New Age spiritual life or understanding. This is not however a CD for people who simply want to meditate to unwind. Moreover, you are not really participating in this "meditation" as you're only required to close your eyes, and listen to the speaker, and focus on the part of your body that needs healing while you're being fed all these advanced New Age ideas. The music is okay. I find the drums a bit distracting. This CD does make me fall asleep when I listen to it, but it's mostly because listening to it is like listening to a bed time story read in a very monotone tone of voice with a soothing music in the background. You become disengaged from the story quickly since it's pretty "out there" and doesn't follow any story line, and your mind starts wondering. You fall asleep, but for me the quality of sleep is mostly the same as it is without listening to this CD. Overall, I believe that meditation should involve your mind to achieve another state of consciousness, a more relaxed one. This CD doesn't do it for me. In fact, I feel like I'm being religiously indoctrinated while listening to it, and that is not what I was looking for when I bought this CD.
