Last weekend I found myself bookless. I picked up a romantic novel my wife had recently finished, "Secret Ladder". I had modest expectations; it was not a book I would normally select to read. I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a great read.
A realistic, absorbing familial tension between the three generations of main characters is effectively developed and dealt with.(Often painfully.) The author also displays a delicious appreciation of the French art and food throughout the book. Both the Parisian and local southern settings brought back vivid, pleasurable memories for me of a recent visit. Well done.

The Secret Ladder is a book that is nice and relaxing to read. The story line is very interesting and the characters are very likeable. It's a nice romance, a very good book to give to friends as a gift.

Ever the lover of all things even partly French, I was not disappointed in this delightful little book, not only for its authenticity of Paris and French countryside settings but for the understated yet touching handling of what are some of Life's most deeply-felt challenges: the death of a spouse, the sometimes rocky relationship with an adult child, the courage it takes to change a "life path." Tyndall guides us on a private viewing of what happens when one woman's life is turned upside-down. It happens every day to countless women and mostly we don't think a lot about it unless it is someone we know. While the ups and downs are not hugely dramatic, the story is real and heartfelt; it ebbs and flows so very naturally that we are drawn in and away, not wanting to put the book down until the story is finished. Brava to this first-time author!

A great first novel that embodies everything you want in a good read - romance, family drama and a wonderful outcome. Very compelling - I couldn't put it down - and easy to relate to. Who hasn't seen hardship, dealt with family health issues and tensions with growing children - and who doesn't yearn for a perfect romance to sweep you off your feet? Bravo!
