Book Description

August 4, 2011
When Stella and her younger brother, Tom, move to their new London home, they become mystified by the disappearances of Harry, their elderly neighbour's dog. Where does he go? And why does he keep reappearing wet-through? Their quest to solve the riddle over the summer holidays soon leads to a boat buried under a grassy mound - and a tunnel that takes them to a secret lake. Who is the boy rowing towards them who looks so terrified? And whose are those children's voices carried on the wind from beyond the woods? Stella and Tom soon discover that they have travelled back in time to their home and its gardens almost 100 years earlier. Here they befriend the children living in their past time home and become embroiled in a daring plan to rescue a young boy who's been falsely accused of theft. As the story unravels the children make both friends and enemies, and uncover some startling connections between the past and present.

More About the Author

Hi! I'm Karen Inglis. I live in London in the UK.

'The Secret Lake' was my first children's book. It is wonderful to see it out of the drawer and in print and on Kindle! And I'm delighted that it's been getting so many 5-star reviews, both in the USA and in the UK! The best bit is doing book signings and meeting the wonderful children who have read it :)

I've been writing ever since I was little and still have a box of my daily diaries hidden in a cupboard somewhere! I'm a big dreamer and thinker, which is how The Secret Lake came about... I hope that you'll enjoy and share this very special story with family and friends!

My second book, 'Eeek!'is about a runaway alien who loves soccer! It's filled with fun black and white illustrations - even the Kindle version! Don't miss out if you are a boy or girl aged 7-10 who loves soccer and humor! And be ready for a surprise!

My next book is due out in November 2012. It's called Ferdinand Fox's Big Sleep and will be a rhyming picture book for 3-6 yr-olds :)

Best wishes,

Karen

Format:Paperback
I bought this for my youngest aged 10. She couldn't wait to start it and read it in one sitting during an afternoon. I think that says it all! I was so surprised and wondered what captivated her that I too read it! A really lovely story, well written and clear for children to grasp its concept. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Friendship November 7, 2011
Format:Paperback
The Secret Lake transported me to a time when I felt innocent and full of wonder. The bonds of friendship, sense of adventure, magical tunnel and lake created a world where the impossible became possible. I loved the characters and adored Mrs. Moon. This story reminded me that there is a child living inside each elderly person and a world of experience and knowledge is there to be unlocked and cherished. The plot is compelling, exciting, and the simple truths of friendship and time resonate throughout the tale. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging mystery for young readers September 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
The Secret Lake is a mix of many delights - there's time-traveling, a mystery, and lots of adventure. These ingredients make for an interesting reading experience for young children (I'd say ages 6-9). The two central characters are Stella and her younger brother Tom who have just recently moved to London from Hong Kong.

As the two kids try to keep themselves occupied during their school holidays, they are puzzled by the behavior of their neighbor's dog, Harry. The mutt has a tendency to appear and disappear, and is always sopping wet! What does Harry get up to? Well, soon enough the pair discover a tunnel that literally takes them through time to their home, only its now about a century earlier!

There's a nice sense of adventure throughout the story as Stella and Tom not only make some startling discoveries but also befriend other children from the past such as Jack and Emma. Oh, and there's dancing moles too, and they play an important role in the story! There are some simple plot twists that will keep young readers entertained. The Secret Lake brought to mind some of my favorite Enid Blyton mysteries from my childhood. It made for a cozy read with my six-year-old daughter.

My daughter is 10, she could not put it down!!! She takes her Kindle to school and is able to read the Secret Lake there. She loves the story line and if a book does not grab her attention immediately she quickly looses interest! The Secret Lake held her attention. A must read

5.0 out of 5 stars CAPTIVATING AND MAGICAL October 14, 2011
By JJ
Format:Paperback
The Secret Lake is a captivating and magical story that urged me to keep on turning the page. I'm not generally a huge reader but this book drew me in and I got caught up in the story. I personally believe that The Secret Lake is a book that is suitable for all children and young teens or even the occasional adult, being 17 myself, because for young children they will be swept along and intrigued to find out the truth about Harry and his whereabouts, and for older children they will remember the excitement of their childhood and their wild imaginations and fantasies. I definitely recommend this book for anybody who is looking to get their children excited to go to bed, just to hear the next chapter, or anyone who wants to re live the excitement of being a child again.
