Ever wonder what lies behind those big yellow eyes? Cat lovers, wonder no more, as this tell-all guide exposes the secrets of the cat’s most mystifying behaviors. A basic introduction sets the stage and reveals that despite centuries of living as domestic household pets, cats remain relatively unchanged from their ancient ancestors. These famously stubborn animals have adapted to use litter boxes and scratching posts—and Halls has the solutions when these adaptations go awry. Colorful sidebars provide real-life anecdotes, tips and advice, and a dose of cat trivia. All feline colors, shapes, and sizes are represented in the abundant photographs of cuddly kittens and lazy loungers. A thorough read guarantees cat owners will be able to calculate their cat’s age in human years, effectively communicate their affections, and ensure they’re supplying proper nutrition, toys, and love to their favorite furry feline. --Annie McCormick

All cat owners know their beloved felines live in a world all their own. And that's exactly what author Vicky Halls seeks to find out in her new book... Halls offers hundreds of tidbits that cat owners will lap up. (Tulsa World 2010-11-01)

Maybe this is the book every I'm not a cat person person needs to read. Halls, a cat behaviorist and an author of several books on cat behavior, looks at the makeup of felines, their physical attributes (five toes on the front feet, four on the rear paws) and explains how to make life with the domestic cat more fulfilling, more fun.... Even noncat people will be entertained and educated. (William Hageman Chicago Tribune 2011-08-16)

[Hall] packs an incredible amount of useful information into 208 pages. (Miami Herald 2011-09-03)

If you are a cat lover, this book should be part of your library.

I don't think it sucessfully achieves that aim, which based on the title, is apparently the aim of this book.

I found alot of really good facts and found the book very well written.

This book does a good job of describing how a cat views the world. Being able to adopt this perspective is essential to properly care for a cat. The cat-related claims the book makes are grounded in science, so the book is refreshingly free of the sometimes fanciful claims made by non-scientists. The photography and book design are attractive, and overall I think the book represents a good value considering the very reasonable price.

This is a lovely book for feline lovers - especially the color photography, with images of cats on every page turn. Most images match what is being discussed in the text.

But the book doesn't in my view really deliver on its title. There is not a great deal of actual cat psychology inside, whereas there is a deal on caring for cats. The text is at times superficial. I came away from reading this book with a better understanding of how to care for my cat, but without understanding a great deal more about how my cat actually sees the world. Better would have been the approach "your cat does x, because of y". True there are some facts spelt out in the book which can help you understand your cat better, but often the theory isn't explicitly linked to the behavior by the author. The reader has to make the link himself.

Personally I'd have been quite happy to dispense with some of the (admittedly lovely) cat photographs for more scientific information such as tables, charts and diagrams. The book contains no footnotes or bibliography so we don't know where to go for further information.

All in all it comes across as a compromise between a coffee table book and a book designed to help you look after your cat's needs better. But does it really get you into your cat's mind? I don't think it sucessfully achieves that aim, which based on the title, is apparently the aim of this book.

Reading this book and putting into practice its advice would no doubt make you a better cat owner, however.

Book does have some good facts, but repeats a lot and doesn't go into detail nor include as much info as I had hoped.

I ordered this book because my husband and I had rescued a shelter cat from our local SPCA and we were having many issues with him when he first came into our home. The book helped us to understand what we needed to do to help him feel more relaxed and to reduce the stress he was undergoing. I found alot of really good facts and found the book very well written. He is doing very well now and I'm so glad I have this resource to turn to when I need it.

I have always been a dog person, but working in an animal hospital for 12 years has inspired a love for cats too. In my quest to find out as much as possible about this mysterious animal i have read many books on the subject. Vicky Halls does an excellent job of explaining many of the wondrous things about cats. If you are a cat lover, this book should be part of your library.
