Review

The Secret Lives of Teen Girls is a bold and much needed perspective on teen sexuality and should be a must read for all parents of teens. Evelyn's patient stories and personal experiences provide real-world examples that help readers to relate to the challenges mothers and daughters face during adolescence. I have been a women’s health care provider for over 25 years and plan to recommend this book to parents seeking guidance during the teen years.”

Carrie Klima, PhD, CNM, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing

“I laughed aloud and bemoaned that I hadn’t read The Secret Lives of Teen Girls before my daughter’s adolescence arrived. With wisdom, grace, and an endearing sense of humor, Evelyn Resh encourages a mother to just say yes to her daughter’s emerging sexual, relational, and uniquely independent self. Both informative and entertaining, it’s sure to resonate with mothers of daughters, who dance on the head of a pin as we try to help our daughters negotiate the joys of becoming women.”

Renée Schultz, co-author, The Mother-Daughter Project

“An honest, cogent, indispensible guide that sparkles with insights for parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors, and everyone who cares about teenage girls. Evelyn Resh tackles the sexual dramas and paradoxes of growing up with sound medical advice and teachable ‘Aha!’ moments that offer galaxies more than ‘just say no.’”

Gina Ogden, PhD, author of Women Who Love Sex, The Heart and Soul of Sex, and The Return of Desire.

“Whether or not we know it, Evelyn Resh’s The Secret Lives of Teen Girls is a resource we all have been waiting for. Her insights about adolescent girls’ sexuality, maternal fears and anxiety, and the intricate relationship between the two are clearly and honestly discussed in this brave new book. Sharing examples that demonstrate the sometimes frightening aspects of adolescent rebellion, Ms. Resh offers timely advice that can help mothers take the bold steps to honor their daughters’ choices and accept their mistakes. The author’s wisdom about adolescent girls’ sexuality, tempered with humor and sensitivity, make this book essential reading for every mother of a teenage girl.”

Catriona McHardy, Vice President of Education & Training, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England

The Secret Life of Teen Girls is a remarkable book with a critical message for girls and women of all ages. The author's authority, expertise, and humor on the subject of healthy sexuality and wellness lend a sensible and compassionate voice to a sensitive and often uncomfortable topic. This is a book which has great range, from expertly described psychophysiology of the body and brain to hilarious, laugh out loud vignettes from her annals of parenting a teen girl. This is a must read for parents, teens, tweens, grandparents, teachers, and anyone else interested in a smart, interesting, provocative, and funny book.

Finally! Evelyn Resh finally speaks to the truth about sexuality and teens. I had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Resh speak at a book signing in Chicago. She is just as articulate and funny as her writing. She makes an often tough subject accessible. I could just hear the sighs of relief from the other audience members as they felt Ms. Resh speaking to them. After reading this book, I truly understand just how critical it is to welcome our girls need for safe exploration and validation is. This rare, truthful insight into teenage girls will be "the" book on this subject well into the future.

The Book I've Been Hoping to Find for Parents of Teenage Girls

Achieving milestones like learning to walk and talk are familiar stages of child development. There are countless books to help guide parents on what to expect. There are other areas, such as our daughters' sexuality between the ages of 11 and 18, where helpful guidance is in short supply.

Girls this age often work overtime at looking cool and grown-up despite being works in progress. They are often seeking validation from their peers at a cost that can leave parents frightened or angry.

There's also the music they love, the movies they watch and the magazines they read--all which speak to their sexuality. And even if your daughter were raised in a cultural vacuum, her maturing body and the hormones in her veins would be their own agents of change.

Yet as parents, we often deny our daughters' emerging sexuality or make it clear that we expect them to deny it. Fortunately, Evelyn Resh's book for parents of teenage girls addresses this disconnect. It offers us more effective ways to deal with our daughters' sexuality, including the use of humor to diffuse situations rather than threats or pretending it's not an issue.

Ms. Resh has spent years working with teenage girls, helping to guide their growth when their parents were not able to acknowledge the sexual milestones they had reached.

I've long searched for a book for parents of teens that would address these very issues, and now I've found one that I can wholeheartedly recommend. Whether you agree with Ms. Resh's perspective or not, this book is helpful because it frames the sexuality of teenage girls in ways that actually make sense.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: The Secret Lives of Teen Girls: What Your Mother Wouldn't Talk about but Your Daughter Needs to Know by Evelyn Resh.

I wish my mother had this to read when I was growing up! Wonderfully written and laugh out loud funny at times, this book puts it simply: we must not be afraid to talk, share, listen and understand our teens. It is easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to identify with- we must be parents and be clear with what it means to be a parent, but not at the expense of a relationship with our children. We can both parent and communicate-what a concept! A must read for anyone struggling with, or intersted in interacting, with a teen!

I saw this book in a gift shop and passed it by because I don't have a teenage daughter but then someone gave it to me as a gift and I couldn't put it down. It is insightful and filled with practical information combined with personal stories that support Evelyn Resh's ideas and theories. She has an extensive background working with a variety of women and brings so much insight to the subject of women and their sexuality. I think it is valuable information no matter your age. Very glad to have read it. Definitely recommend it!!
