On the advice of a friend (Thanks Jack!) who shares some interests similar to my own, I downloaded the kindle edition of The Secret Science Behind Miracles. It was a real bargain at 99 cents. Max Freedom Long, who died in 1971, gave his readers an in-depth survey and analysis of the practices and beliefs of the Kahunas of Hawaii. The author spent many years in Hawaii, beginning in 1917, studying the Kahunas. While some of what he offered in this book is in the nature of hearsay and some in the nature of first-hand observations - but still from the outside - he managed in any event to bring the material in a way that is intelligent, comprehensive and potentially very useful. Some of Long's intellectual conclusions I rejected but his careful factual reporting of the practices and belief system of the Kahunas are far too interesting to ignore. This book is a must read, in my opinion, for anyone practicing hypnotism in any of the healing sciences. Moreover, any student of Gurdjieff who opens this book will find a surprising amount of relevant material. Gurdjieff's ideas show what is missing from Long's accounts, the "how," but there is some interesting material one doesn't find easily in the Gurdjieff literature. My email advice to some friends in the Gurdjieff work: "You'll find it interesting, I feel, partly because it's all about how these Kahunas, who are obviously developed in understanding of the structure of man, are nothing about "man cannot do" but quite the opposite. The doing is miraculous - involves a special relationship in which a door is opened to the 'high self.' You'll want to read this."

Excellent read; well written, informative, thorough and fascinating. Long has saved an incredible amount of ancient knowledge from being lost to us. You will be amazed at the convincing explanations for many of the world's beliefs and ritual practices, and may become convinced that there really is a form of magic practiced by the keepers of ancient knowledge.

The Physics of Miracles: Tapping in to the Field of Consciousness Potential is my closest comparable here. Both books understand that our regular lives are like the lowest energy states for electrons; add more energy, and many more possibilities emerge. What you have to know is that MFL lived in Hawaii for a time, when Huna was illegal. He claims to have gotten his ideas by decoding them, using multiple meanings of Hawaiian, in the Bible. Hawaiian has multiple layers of meaning, just as in Semitic languages. In actual fact, he had to have been studying with a Kahuna La'au'ao, and had to conceal that. The basic ideas of Huna are the interaction of the higher self, Aumakua, the conscious mind, Uhane, and subconscious, Unihipili. The images and feelings you run through your consciousness are given by the subconscious to the superconscious, the higher self, which crystallizes them into what happens in your life. There is Mana, life force energy. That is a thumbnail at best. I was given all of MFL's books, in high school, and read through them multiple times. Just reading the books is not enough. I have since studied with practicioners. The first time I brought my higher self in, consciously, well that was interesting. For its time, this book is incredible, and it's still pretty good. I would have liked some tighter editing.

I first read this book soon after I heard of it years ago and now own his complete series. The one I ordered is a second copy so that I can loan it. Shamans today do not go as deeply as the kahunas of Hawaii. This book is an introduction into Hawaiian shamanism, though it is not called that. WRitten in English that may be a little difficult at first, it is well worth the effort to find the gems included. DEA, Boreadean Order of Druid and Feryllt

This is a fascinating first-hand account of a lost religion from Max Freedom Long, who lived with the Kahuna, in Hawaii. The ideas brought to light from the Huna religion are very interesting. They touch on some of ideas hinted at by modern day religions but without the sort of mass "hypnosis/hysteria" that seems to accompany them. The ideas touch on are then expounded on and explained (From their point of view)providing insight and guideance as to what they believe in. If you believe that people do not use their minds to their full capacity, this book will interest you, regardless of if you believe in the principles taught within it or not.
