I am one of the photographers featured in this book (my first photo sale), so I am, understandably, not totally objective. It is an attractive, glossy book with a well-structured table of contents & a detailed index. My photo is displayed on both page 84 & the back cover. I was disappointed that no information was given about my photo, since it was very rare. I live in New York state & my picture is of a Bullock's Oriole. Most birders will know that the Bullock's Oriole is, usually, seen in the United States from Indiana west & that it winters in Mexico & Central America. This particular bird showed up at my deck on January 11, 2009, the morning after a snowstorm. When I put out food for him, he spent the next 2 1/2 weeks, feeding exclusively at my deck. Since this was the first confirmed sighting of a Bullock's Oriole in an 11-county range, he drew visitors from as far away as New York City, Pittsfield, MA, & Vermont! He was a delightful bird. Unfortunately, because of his flamboyant coloring, I believe he fell prey to a Cooper's Hawk. One morning, he simply didn't show up to feed. Although the Bullock's Oriole is pictured on my snowy deck, the book doesn't mention that this is unusual &, by the premise of the book's title, seems to imply that I attracted him to my deck by putting out desirable food. This was not the case. He came to my deck hungry & I put out food in response to his arrival. The book has many positive qualities, but I felt the information about the Bullock's Oriole was misleading.

I got an email from organicgardening.com (Rodale) recently about this book. My daughter would love the book as part of our schooling curriculum. After a LOT of clicking past the "free trial" information, I figured out that they wanted to charge me a whopping $32 for this book ("four easy payments of $7.99!"). So I come over here to Amazon and find it for half that. Good deal, right?

Keep hunting. The same author of this August 30, 2011 book wrote ANOTHER backyard birding book for Rodale in 2008: Best-Ever Backyard Birding Tips: Hundreds of Easy Ways to Attract the Birds You Love to Watch (Rodale Organic Gardening Books). Price of that book used here on Amazon or on half dot com is (at this time) less than 25% of the original cost of the book from Rodale.

Can't prove it, but I imagine that a book on the same timeless subject by the same author just 3 years later is going to be full of the same information.

I know which one I'm buying, anyway.

Purchased this as a gift for my recently retired mother who enjoys watching the birds in her backyard.
The book is well organized and full of lots of beautiful photos.
Plenty of useful information for the casual bird-watcher wanting to identify different birds, learn where they nest, what they eat, time of year they will arrive.
Recommendations for selecting food and feeders to attract specific birds, types of flowers & trees to plant etc. also helpful.
Wish I had more time to look through the book before gifting to my mother!

My neighbor and I have a small problem. He & his girlfriend seems to attract all the small wild birds in our neighborhood. I mean it seems we try to out do in finding the better plants to bushes. Until last week I lost due to frost and the weather that dipped to 28 degrees. My birds flew to his house. My plants died, so he has the shelter in the evergreen tree's. He told me that he's been having hawks in the evergreen trees scaring his baby birds. So I bought him this book as a gift. I haven't given it to him yet. But he's helped me in the past & I'm grateful and adding more to this gift. I love this book so much that, I have one in my wish list 4 me.

Since we are still learning about northwest Ohio, this book has been a big help with gaining backyard visitors other than the typical sparrow-type bird. We are now seeing cardinals, red tanagers, and golden finches. I'm still working on attracting hummingbirds, but since we live on a busy street just off the square, it's taking more time. However, we do have one hummingbird and hope to have more soon.

I enjoyed this book especially the treats you can make yourself for the birds. It was easy to read, informative and had good pictures. As a novice birder I think it put me on the right path. since I live in Florida not all the info was relevant but that isn't her fault just my personal geography. kathleen

not only for backyard bird-feeding but about birds. This book will be a great resource to identify many of the birds I have taken photos of and for future picture taking. The book is new, does not show any signs of use. Thank you so very much. I have taken pictures of a rare bird but that was in London.

It was a good comprehensive book about bird-feeding. I would have liked to seen more "recipes" for mixing seed to attract the birds that live in our area that I want to attract. It would be a great book for someone new to bird feeding/watching.
