From the back cover: "Calmly focusing on your own behavior, choices, and moods (which you can control) rather than your spouse's (which you cannot) is the first step toward the relationship you really want."

This is a goal that I have been working on, struggling with, and failing at (at least 50% of the time) for going on five years. I've taken this kind of a philosophy, twisted it in all the wrong ways, and still struggled with figuring out what the correct solution is. So, naturally, I wanted to read this book in hopes of finding answers. I wanted to learn to be less emotionally reactive (what the author calls "screaming") without giving up my personal integrity, desires and rights as an individual.

What I like about this book

I love the lessons at the core of this book. The primary focus of this book is to teach its reader: Focus on yourself. Your emotional reactions are your fault [my words, author's message.] Accepting personal responsibility for your emotions and actions is stressed quite a bit. Integrity is at the core of intimacy [a quote from the book that I really liked: "Beginning to pursue true intimacy is always a centered-self affair, with one spouse acting bravely to initiate with integrity."] It takes two whole people who want each other to form a great relationship: not two incomplete people who need each other to feel whole. This book is about growing into your strongest self, learning to represent yourself authentically, and growing toward true intimacy in your marriage.

I also love the author's definition of Failure: Neglecting what we want most for what we want right now.

This is honestly the best marriage book I've ever read. The title is, granted, very bizarre--but once you get past that, it will REVOLUTIONIZE your marriage. This book honestly and openly addresses the unhealthy standards our society teaches about how a marriage should work, and teaches you to see your marriage as an equal partnership between 2 individuals. It challenges you to worry less about your spouses' behavior and focus on your own actions, thoughts, feelings. By taking control of your own behavior and reactions, you can learn to be a healthy, "self centered" individual--capable of authentically representing your thoughts and emotions, in hopes of achieving an intimate connection with your spouse.

**Warning** If you are the kind of person who enjoys being a "victim" to life, and are not interested in taking responsibility for yourself as an adult--you will NOT like this book. This is not a book about changing your spouse--this is a book about changing YOURSELF.

This is a wonderful book for anyone in a relationship. Yes it says Marriage in the title, but it is great advice for anyone sharing their journey through life with a special someone.
Even when your relationship is smooth sailing this book is relevant. The observations and suggestions for making things even better are insightful and actually helpful.
Highly recommended reading, learned a great deal, and learning more as time goes on.
