Book Description

When William and Betty are trapped in a cavern in the Yucatán, they discover a way out through a strange passage that propels them a thousand years into the past. While searching for a way home, they become entangled in conflicts between Mayan kingdoms. Priest Quisac agrees to aid William if he promises to help his people. William is awarded the bloodstone, a magical gem that puts him in the path of Mayan gods, demons, and extraterrestrials.

Can William survive the challenges of the past long enough to return home? Will his love for a Mayan Princess complicate matters? How is William’s destiny tied to the end of the Great Cycle in 2012?

2.0 out of 5 stars Young Adult Literature at Best February 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Serpent Passage by Todd Pitts was one of my first Kindle downloads based on reviews and I learned a serious lesson regarding 5 Star reviews. TSP can best be described, at best, as young adult literature. Nothing wrong with this genre per se, but not for serious adult aficionados of SF/Fantasy.

I found it to be very derivative. Pitt's portrayal of the Mayan legends and culture, complete with the UFO connection and new age paradigms, have been presented in other SF/fantasy works much more effectively decades ago. Nothing new to see here.

I also found his character development and his visual descriptions of the environment (overall narrative) to be very shallow and his writing proved often anti-climatic. For example, (spoilers), the character "Betty" first introduced in the book was really nothing more than a "MacGruffin" used to get the main protagonist into the past and then she basically disappeared from the narrative. Then there was the big battle build up that never happened. The opposing army was literally teleported away "off screen" so to speak before the first spear was hurled. Very disappointing. (I turned the pages alright, but it was to see if I had accidently skipped a few!) I cannot recommend this for adult SF fans.

When reading this book I felt privileged. It is evident - from my limited perspective - that the author did his homework both in the area and the history; and he is not afraid to get into controversial elements the elder Mayans talk about, but mainstream archaeology frowns upon.

Over that ground knowledge he made up a fun story, with he right amounts of adventure and romance.

I enjoyed the story and the landscape. The only thing that tickles me is that the serpent priest is one of the good guys, while the "serpents" are apparently bad guys...

4.0 out of 5 stars Birthday Present for Daughter February 29, 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my daughter, she had it finished by the end of the weekend. She enjoyed it very much but she did comment that there were a few parts she wished had turned out differently. All in all she did enjoy the book and would read more from this author.
